rebuilding or putting in gears

i need help idk if this is the same thing or two different things. i was planning on putting in some gears, but i wanted to also rebuild my transmission. its had it time and has its miles on it. so i was wondering if putting in gears would be like rebuilding or if i still would need to rebuild it after putting the gears in.

 

The gears that we all talk about are in the differential. Rebuilding the tranny is just like refreshing it with a few new gears and some special bushings and such. If you re gear your truck, you have to buy new differential gears for the front and rear diffs. Not cheap to do anything that you are thinking about doing

 

Also if you are rebuilding your tranny, you can have it built a little needier depending on your needs. Stage 1,2,3. Better tow, beefier internals.

You could send it to Martin Crawler and really have her overhauled cost like 2 grand..

haha nah thats ok for that one. its just that i would like it to be a little fresher though. its got about 251k on it now so now u could have and idea of how much shes been through.

 

i know im soo gonna sound like a freaking mental case when i ask this but isnt the differential help for off roading. i was wondering if i was to put bigger tires and run some 4.88 on them wouldnt that help

 

Yea most guys re gear to help with bigger tires. 4.88s would be for like 35s witha V6 or 33s with a 4cly i think.

yea ive got a 3.4 v6 and was planning on running some 285/75/16. how do you think that would be. plus yea i got some friends who are really good with that kind of stuff just need to find the time with work and all. what do you think

 

Lots of ppl run 285s without re gearing.(basicly a 32.6'' tire i think) I am pretty sure you wont have to re gear. And if you want to 4.88 is to short, i think 4.56 puts you closer back to stock gearing.

 

I'm running the same tires on my 2.7L. I have noticed a slight loss in power, but generally you don't need to regear for this. If you were going to 35s, the forums have suggested a regear for this. You will be fine without rehearing for your 285s. Just keep in mind the wear and tear that may occur during daily use...
