Mounting a 285 spare tire, My 2¢ worth (quoted from cheap mod thread)

I went to a muffler shop today and had them cut out the brackets with a torch. They charged me $20 and took about 5 minutes to blow them out (worth foregoing the cutting and sanding)

However clearances where very tight. To clear the diff. I had to adjust the cable bracket slightly off center and hold the tire up against the tow hitch when I drew it up.

Hopefully this will buy me some time for a new rear bumper with spare carrier.
Although I'm not feeling so confident about this arrangement.

Anyway... This is more or less my FYI for those considering this.

On the plus side I do have an idea for fabricating a box for additional storage using this space and spare cable drop...

Yea, there is no way to fit a 285 under the back without removing those brackets.

 

it works... banged the holders up with a hammer. fits perfect.

 

Isn't the tire getting too close to the exhaust? What about the heat exposure?

 

nothing has happened to my tire. the exhaust is cut right where the tire is too... i checked it pretty often when i first did it. the tire doesn't even get hot.

 

Cool. One less concern. I want 285s badly lol

How much worse can it get. I mean, I'm already lifted which increases wind resistance and this baby ain't no Mini Cooper anyway lol

I have my first offroad trail meet next month. I'm just deciding whether to bite the bullet and get them now or see if I can get my stock street tires f'd up enough to warrant new ones after the meet

 

its only like loosing 2 or 3 mpg from what your getting now. i really don't care though its a truck like you said. i say do it before the meet bc then urs will be the cool one at there. hahah

 

Old Thread, I know! I just mounted up my 285/70/R17 spare and It still rubs the diff at full stuff and flexing. Do you guys think dumping the exhaust and getting rid of the exhaust hanger (which my tire is currently resting against) would get rid of the rub?! Thanks

 

Don't cut off the brackets... Grab a hammer and give them a few good hits to bend them up. Install your 285 spare and bend them back down with a crow bar as far as you can to keep the tire from moving forward and hitting the differential. This cost me $0 and I still have brackets to keep it from sliding forward. With the brackets bent all the way up my tire moved forward and hit the pumpkin after a few thousand miles.

 

Finally got a 285/75/16 mounted. It's not rubbing the diff or exhaust, but it is way to the driver side rubbing. Does this matter?

 

Also, with the chain fully torqued in place, the wheel seems to lean too. It's a little crooked...
