Its kinda strange that just Canada and us have this body style and the rest of the world has the other with more options.
I guess one of the deciding factors are surveys they take of what people want. Auto trans, auto power windows, seat heaters so they dont get hemoroids god forbid, and whatever else to make their driving experience as pleasant.
I detail cars and trucks for a living and this is what i find. SUV's are nothing more than a second home, stuffed with everything but the kitchen sink. Tons of decaying food on the floor, hair dryers, makeup, USED diapers under the seat, nail cutters with the clippings and tons of dog hair, or is that from the driver? Drawers under the front seats that are cluttered up with more crapola than you can imagine. My solution is to just put a shed on wheels with a potty, and let them drive that around. Give us back real trucks that you have to get out and lock the hubs, standard trannies, no power windows or locks, and something that rides like the old trucks did, like when you hit a bump, your head hit the ceiling, damn it! And as far as all these coffee cup holders, hell, you will spill more coffee in the holder than if you held it in your hand!

Now how many of you could hold a cup of coffee, shift, scratch ya ass, have a cig in your mouth, adjust the radio, and drive at the sametime?

Toyota once offered a turbo diesel 4x4 std shift,locking hubs, back in the late '80s, I say, bring it back and to hell with all those bench potatoes that think their fully optioned truck is the greatest!

I had forgotten about the diesel they offered for a couple of years back in the 80s.

I guess we are lucky they still offer a manual tranny.

 

Ha ha.. I got a good laugh out of that one. I agree with you. I sometimes refer to SUVs as 'stupid use of vehicle.' I see you are from the Adirondacks..it is beautiful up there. I was up there in September this year, stayed right near Lake Placid..had a great time.

 

I decided to surf the far east, and african nations to see what else was being offered compared to what we have served on our plate here.
rear bumpers are optional if any, but then again, if ya get bumped by an elephant, what good would it do ya.

i still see a second shifter which means the transfer case is still operated the old fashion way instead of what i refer to as the old tv channel knob they insist is better here. no wonder why we have so many cases of carpo tunnel syndrome here! the beds are metal and not the plastic poly wolly we have, and they are of the late 70 early 80 designs with hooks on the outside. here, they rusted out quick, but there was a reason for that happening.
not sure if many today know the story behind that so i will tell it.
our govt imposed a tarrif on imported trucks during that time period, but there was a loop hole in that law. it only pertained to completed trucks, so toyota, nissan, and the chevy luv shipped from japan came without a bed so the tarrif wasnt applied to it.. the bed was manufactured in california and joined with the truck once it came over by slow boat. obviously there was a difference in metal fabrication plus the way it was designed, it rusted quick.

my ideal of the perfect truck would be a combo of what they have and what we have here:
diesel engine, turbo charged ofcourse
std tranny
manual transfer case
4wd with locking hubs
solid front axle (i miss spillin coffee and bumping my head on the roof)
full metal bed
full set of gauges, including volt, oil pressure &, vacuum instead of idiot lights
a light under the hood
thick rubber floor covering instead of this carpet that is a pain in the ass to clean and retains water!
no maintenance lite or tire air pressure lite (get off your ass, and manually check each tire)
if ya cant remember when you changed the oil last or even checked it, you shouldnt be driving.
one modern option (the only one i would allow) is navigation unit. at my age, senile an all, i sometimes forget where i live (the truth is, my navigation has one helluva nice female voice that talks to me and tells me where i am or trying to get to) she can be a bitch though if i veer off course and keeps telling me to turn right (reminds me of my mother in law, though she was never right either)
i would combine the front cab of the U.S. version with the bed of the far east version.

well, feel free to add to this list, i am done, (actually my gf is naked in bed hinting that i should get off the computer)

I agree. I think if Toyota brought a truck like that here they would get a lot of interest. Would love a Turbo-Diesel Straight axle front suspension Hi-Lux

I saw some in Honduras 2 weeks ago. Guy said they were getting 25/30 MPG on the 4x4 4 banger diesel. Sweet We need some hear in the US.
In e-mail Toy about it last year and they never replied. Go figure.

 

I am currently doing an engine swap on this truck for this very reason!

Originally it came with standard everything, brakes, steering, and clutch. But when it is done it will have power brakes and steering, because I plan to plow with it and trust me, plowing without these two items really sucks! But it will ride rough, have locking hubs, a bare bones interior, and intimidating stance, which is what I like! Btw it is a 67 F250 high boy, you practically need a stepping stool to get in, not a truck you will see my grandma riding around in or my future signifigant other driving! XD

 

FYI, the DC is available with a 4 cylinder as a 5-lugger or Prerunner in the US, but not with 4x4.
