I run the AMSoil 5w-30 that's supposed to be good for 15k. I've used AMSoil EaO filters (good for 15k) until I couldn't get them anymore and then switched to the MANN filters and change them at the recommended interval (5-7k I think).

It probably would've been less expensive to use a cheaper oil while I was trying to figure out the contamination problem. It takes time for the impurities to build up in the oil and I had already checked the most likely problem areas (vacuum lines, air intake/filter, etc.). Continued analysis or waiting for a CEL was the only way to know if I still had a problem. Since the problem ended up being in a valve that is attached to the exhaust headers, I'm not sure if a mechanic would have found it if I told them I had an air intake leak.

I did learn a few lessons while trying to find the problem. One of them is that even though you don't have a CEL doesn't mean there isn't a problem with your engine.

I probably won't be doing as many analysis once I get a good baseline for how long I can run the oil with the engine functioning normally.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
You'll have to bring that up with Bobbo. He's the section creator (Almighty, all hail Bobbo).

It's really good stuff and supports my belief a 10K oci really is safe with a good synthetic.

Would also be interesting to know what simply putting a quart of makeup oil in would do for you. I'd have to think it would boost TBN and get you to 15k OCI's pretty easy.

Alright, I just ordered one of these. I'm running Mobil 1 synthetic. I've been running it upwards of 8k miles per change. I'm sure I could run farther, but I'm curious.

    Looking forward to the results!

I sent Bob a PM asking what his thoughts were on adding something for these.

I'm sure he's swamped, so for now, this thread should work just fine.

I can also create one in the 1st Gen section if anybody over there shows some interest.

Would have been interesting to see the TBN numbers... but since you're changing it so very early at 5k it probably wouldn't really have much more value than satisfying curiosity!

It looked disappointing for Royal Purple to not hold viscosity at only 5k miles, maybe it was only the fuel as the lab comments say. But then two of the three went out, and one had only a trace of fuel. I wonder if you're not running your truck on the highway very much? at least for a bit prior to the sample?

    Whats TBN?

I'm anxious for the new one since its my first sample after I switched to Quaker State.

Total Base Number... it's blank on your reports. It's an optional test.

It's a measure of the oil's ability to neutralize acids and starts from a number somewhere around 7 to 11 or so and goes down as the additive package is used up. Arguably, the surest sign a quality synthetic oil fill is ready to be changed is when it gets really close to 1.

Everything I've read suggests it's pretty rare for a quality oil to break down in a healthy engine in normal service; shown by viscosity changing. You can boost TBN by dropping a quart and putting in some make-up but if viscosity is falling you're losing protection; also look for anti-wear additive levels like molybdenum and zinc.

TAN is kind of the the inverse of TBN; it is a measure of an oil's acid level and goes up as the additive package is depleted. To understand well what's happening you need to know what levels are in pristine oil by doing a virgin oil analysis, or VOA, on your oil to develop a baseline.

And then start pushing OCI's, taking samples at regular intervals to see how it's doing. Once you determine your baseline you back off a few Kmiles and there's your OCI.

Now I see the utility to do an oil analysis by a professional laboratory. Blackstone seems to know their things. Thank you for these examples of how an oil analysis can show potential problems with an engine.

I did my first oil change at around 2k miles. I personally wouldn't run break-in oil for 5k miles

I definitely do now. I will probably do another one in 1,000mi and get another UOA to see how it changed.

The nice thing is that Toyota does most of the breaking in at their factory, so the 1GR-FE's are actually just shipped with Mobil 5W-30 Conventional. I'm not sure about the 2.7L.

On your 2011, you should have free maintenance. Just use your first oil change at 1,000, second at 2,000 or whatever, etc...

Thanks for posting guys! Awesome results! I'm hoping with my ridiculously short OCI's I can get those kinds of results once my engine is broken in - even with the short trips I make every day.

Not sure if you care, but you may want to blur out your full name, address and phone number. Might minimize the heckling from cop haters. :p
