Traction Control or lack thereof...

I have only had my used 2006 Tacoma for about 2 weeks and today is the first bit of rain it has seen since I bought it. But I am spinning the rear wheels a lot in the light rain we are getting, drove 10 miles this morning and spun the tires going up a small incline, and around 3 turns, I am not gunning it, and driving pretty tamely. I have a 2006 Double Cab V6 4x4 Off Road model with good tire tread, I am in 2WD H too anbd starting from a stop or going around a turn at less than 20mph, in places where I have been driving for the last 3 years and never had an issue with my other cars. I thought ATRAC was supposed to kick in an nanny this sort of stuff, not that spinning the tires isnt fun, but when you arent planning on it, and in theory it shouldnt happen, it is a bit odd...

TRAC and A-TRAC were not standard on Off Road 4WDs until 2009. Some pre-'09s had TRAC... My '05 didn't.

Sounds like you have the same set up as my '05 (open diffs.). Use 4WD if you have traction problems.. but never on dry pavement.

An empty pickup on a rainy road is terrible, always has been... VSC and TRAC or 4WD make the thing drivable... Get a 2009 + if you want the VSC and TRAC in 2WD.

 

Interesting, I didnt realize that ATRAC or TRAC wasnt on pre 2009 models... So there is not traction control system at all on my 2006 model?

How fast can you go in 4wd High?

Sounds like you need better tires. I have a 2007, no traction control and I don't spin at all in the rain.

 

There is a card in your sun visor... all the data. You can go into H4 at speeds up to 60 mph...

 

If you gun the gas pedal and your bed is empty, it will very much spin... if you are smart and ease the gas then, sure!

I was taking the OP at his word that he doesn't gun it and is spinning pre-maturely in which case his tires suck!

 

My 2007 has the vsc and trac but since I have good tires and don't drive fast vsc and trac doesn't kick in on wet pavement. The only time I've had it do it's job was slipping on loose ground while offroading or on ice/snow. How many miles are on your tires and what kind are they? I have bfg a/ts and the weight of a canopy in back. I'd say either your tires needs replacing or you might want to add a bit of weight in the bed. Be carefull...especially with winter comeing.

 

I have to check on the tires, I am not sure who makes them. But the tread is still good, not even close to the wear strips. I have no idea what kind of miles are on the tires, they were on there when I bought it and they didnt have records for them.

If I add some weight to the bed, about hos much should I add, and what is the best "weight" to add? I am thinking sand bags.

 

I'd try a couple sand bags placed over the rear axle. Even with the weight of a SnugTop canopy I use 2 sandbags during the winter months...these trucks are really light in the back especially with the composite beds.

 

Why on earth would you ever recommend buying a 09+ just for VSC and TRAC? Have we not proven numerous times that it is available on 05-08 models? I know I have, just look at my gallery.

 

Good point, anyone who wants VSC and TRAC should buy an 09+ because it wasn't standard until then.
