I've only had my brand new Taco for a couple weeks now. I was checking a few things like tire pressure, oil level, etc. and noticed the oil level seems high to me.

The oil comes up to about 1 inch above the second dot on the dip stick. I checked it when it was cool (hasn't been driven in a couple hours) a few times and every time the oil horizontal line stopped about 1 inch above the second dot on the dip stick.

It came from the factory that way. Is this normal???? :(

    Thanks guys!

Seems kinda high, but it could be the dipstick too. Only way to tell for sure, is to drain the oil, change the filter, and re fill with 5.5 qts. of your favorite oil. :)

I have just over 800 miles on my turck and checked the oil the other day when I put gas in the tank and thought it looked a bit hight too. I chocked it up to being warn but after reading this i just ran out to the garage and checked again and sure enough it is around 1/2 inch above the top dot. I was thinking about changing out the oil soon anyway for "break-in" purposes. I like to keep mine around the middle ground. I'll have to see exactly how much it takes to get in the middle of the dots.

Seems like that would be a bit high anyways but yea if you've got about 500 miles on the break-in oil, change that piss out for something good.

Are you parked on level ground when checking the oil level?

    stock, for now
before you change the oil, the dipstick sits crooked in the pan..Check the oil, but look at both sides of the dipstick..One side will be high, the other side will be perfectly normal. Just a thought

I can't trust the dipstick in my Tacoma, but since I change my own oil, I know I have the right amount in the pan. Has anyone asked the dealer if the dipsticks are accurate, or do you go by the manual? That's what I go by.

I bought mine used, with a nice little giffy chain sticker in the corner of my windshield. First thing i did was rip that shit off, drain it, change filter then put in 5.5 qt of fresh stuff.

I bought my Tacoma new, and when I checked the oil, it was about 1/2 inch above the full line. When I changed the oil I put in 6 quarts (the manual says 6.1) and sure enough it was 1/2 inch over the line. I don't know what to trust. Maybe I'll just put in 5.5 also. It's better to be a little low than over full.

I put in 5.5 and it is right at the second dot or below it slightly.... good enough for me.

Also I took sand paper and roughed up the dip stick around the dots, makes the oil stick to it a little better.

But yeah the dip stick sucks

I'll try that sandpaper trick, thanks.

none except for crappy hub caps and floor mats.
Funny that everyone is mentioning the factory says fill with 6.1 qts and its a tad over filled. Mine said the same thing and its a 96 4 banger. But like everyone else, its really more like 5.5 or so. I found that out after the 1st change when it was new. I don't even think about it now, but yup- 5.5 and she's good to go.

Just so everyone is on the same page:
The Second Gen. 2.7 holds 6.1 qts.
Second Gen 4.0 holds 5.5 qys.

Because I have the lifetime warranty I'll need to take it to the dealership and get them to change the oil. For the lifetime warranty you have to have real good documentation of your maintenance.

So should I go with the second dot on the dipstick or 5.5 quarts? From reading all the posts it seems like the 2 will be different.
