rear brake noises

i have been having an issue with my rear brakes making loud noises as i am coming to a stop. they never made any noises before i lowered my truck. it's definitely coming from the drivers side but it may be coming from passenger side also.

when i lightly press the brakes as i'm slowing down it sounds like the noise occurs each revolution of the wheel. the harder i press the brakes while slowing to a stop the more constant and louder the sound. if i'm on an incline like a driveway in neutral, roll backwards and slowly press the brake down it does it constant also.

anyone have any ideas why the brakes are making this loud noise?

i've never worked on brakes but i'm considering trying to slightly adjust the rear drum shoes. would i use a flat head screwdriver to spin the star wheel a couple clicks one way or another?

 

go to a shop and have them looked at, most places will give you a free visual inspection on brakes. At the very least have them make sure there is nothing physically wrong with them.

Since you have not worked on brakes before definitely have someone else look at them.
It could be something simple.

 

yeah i haven't touched them and it's been like this for a long time. since they started making the noise my brakes have felt stronger and i have felt like they stop better. it really sounds like a u-haul or dump truck or something when i am coming to a stop.

i too believe it is more than likely something simple, i just don't know what it is.

 

Well if the brakes look ok and not contaminated then you might just need a CLA ( clean ,lube and adjust), and have them chamfer the leading and trailing edges of the shoes for the groaning.
But, without seeing and not knowing it's hard to give you a good answer.
