    Right now there's some starving kid in Africa weaving reeds together to make straps, so he can lash two makeshift sandles formed from old crushed plastic coke bottles to his feet, so he can trek 10 miles across desert sands to a red cross aid station and pick up this week's ration of rice and water-purification tablets.

    Technology is not a necessity.

    I am starting ski patrol classes tomorrow. And all course material is via internet. So either you have a laptop or a tablet you have close to 500 pages to print out.

    I'm just going by WHO statistics.

    Anyway, while I'm sure people would love to rationalize that they *need* an iPhone so they can constantly monitor their facebook account, the reality of the situation is you're upping your credit card debt for toys.

    Depending on perspective, sure. I was more under the impression OP was referring to the modern context.

    I spent all summer living in a tent, with no cell phone reception no electricity or running water. This is truly the first time I NEEDED a piece of technology to do something other than check TW or Facebook.

    Dude, I was on safari in Botswana, out deep into the Okavango Delta and snapped a photo of this little kid near some reed shacks that had goats in the yard. As I pulled away happy with catching a shot of a native yet surprised by his straight white teeth I noticed in the picture that he had a cellphone in his hand. I'm still stunned.
