4x4 stick shift lockout hubs or electronic?

I dnt know bout you guys but i miss the good ole days when you had to get out and lock the hubs in or leave them locked and i really miss the shifter in the floor back in those days you knew it was in 4wheel when u put her n and you even had a way to use a low range in 2wheel if you didnt lock the hubs.So why the change ?

 

i agree the older design was better..

 

I don't really miss hopping out in the snow and digging through it to get my hubs locked in .

Manual shifters just feel good. Manual hubs can be very convenient for wheelers.

That said, the current system isn't bad by any stretch.

 

I didnt mind the hubs much but i really do mis the shifter in the floor it was a better design less computer crap simple to use . I just wish my 08 had what my 91 had that thing went like a tank

I don't need no $1,200 actuator and a computer to put a transfer case into 4wd for me.
Unfortunately that's the way of the world now.

The vehicles on the road now turn on your head lights
turn on your wipers
Tell you a low tire
remind you of an oil change
show you where to go
adjust your seat.
roll your windows
stop for you
park for you
adjust the heat for you
Pretty soon it's going to wipe your ass.

Generally, People have no driving skills anymore. Can't think in a panic situation. The vehicle does it all.

I'd love to see every vehicle a std trans again
no power windows or seats
locking hubs and levers.

Hey you might have to actually do something behind the wheel with some skill and not fall asleep.

The rest of your rant is misguided, but this is the root of the issue.

Technological whiz-doos have had no effect on driving skill - the requirements for licensure are the same.

The issue is that people are MUCH more distracted now while driving, between their phone, their iPod, etc.

I don't fuck with any of that shit while driving. Probably why I've never been in an accident.

You can Get an FJ case and convert it to a twin stick configuration if you want to shift it. I swapped mine and love it.

I have never had a problem shifting into 4WD so I have no complaints...just like my pops said (miss ya dad) if it aint made out of steel its a POS lol...its an older generation thing, but you guys get my point...

 

I wouldn't bother doing the twin stick unless you're willing to do all the other needed stuff to use 2lo too. Otherwise that second stick is useless.

 

this, or deep mud, but would prefer a manual shifter any day of the week but could do without hubs, my Bronco and Jeep have them, dont need them on the Taco

I hate auto hubs and auto 4x4...on my trail rig i lock the hubs when i go out and expect to use 4x4 if i'm not necessarily in 4x4...then when i need 4x4 i just shift'er on in to H or L depending on what wheeling i'm doing...I've seen more auto hubs fail and put people in bad situations than I have manual...I've grenaded a warn premium hub but that was simply because i was open-open and tried bumping over and the wheel with all the power up front was off the ground and when it hit the hub went...much better than a front diff tho

IMHO mechanical system >> pneumatic or electric...simply b/c water and electronics don't get along and pneumatics can be as reliable...I got lucky in getting my 6 speed but i paid dearly for it...i hate autotragics...only owned 1 in my life and it sucked but i couldnt wait a month for a manual to come available

 

yea good call...i just drive my taco and havent really gotten into it...I think that's what all the "newer" trucks have...i know when i was in moab last may a 2nd gen Xterra snapped an axle shaft and we had to pull both fronts to get him off the trial but I think they may be full time 4x4

my trail truck is 86.5 chassis and 95 powertrain so i'm behind the power curve on "modern" 4x4 powertrains

could always just SAS and figure out how to cram an atlas in there...or any other Tcase that is probably more cost effective than an atlas

 

I like my 99 , and bought it 6 years ago, because I liked the manual hub, trans case, I only wish I could of found one with a locker in the rear, hell I found it in N.C. through Car Max and had it shipped here.
