Tires – to be or not to be…..

I have a question. So today I broke down and forked over the cash to Discount Tires to put new tires on my truck. I got Terra Grapplers P285/70/17 which are replacing the current Revo 265/70/17. The wheels are 17x9 KMC Hoss with 4.53 backspacing and there under an OME lift kit w/Dekar springs (purchased and installed by dealer/TRDpart4U), oem uca, dealer aligned after lift.

About 30-miniutes into the install the mechanic comes out and says man there not going to fit and I am thinking no bigy I just have to remove the mud flaps and trim a little fender plastic like everyone else has had to do. He shows me the driver side tire that he just installed, turns the wheel and sure enough its hitting the flap big time (note: my 265/70/17 Revo’s rub a little on the plastic and flap so I knew I would be trimming and removing). I tell him I am going to remove the flap and he says man the tire is still going to be hitting the metal behind the mud flap/cab mount too. He then cuts the wheel the opposite way (about 3/4 turn) and it is really pushing the plastic fender out and then he tries to return the wheel straight and it grabs the fender and wants to pull it completely off the truck.

I backed out of the install, sick cause I was pumped. Should I have removed and trimmed before I went to the tire shop? Am I missing something? I think I would have pulled the fenders off the truck before I got it home. They told me I need about another 1” for the 285s to work? Ideas, help please - I really want to run the 285s.

I only took one pic of the tire, I think the tire was in the straight ahead position.

 

How much lift?

 

Just chop off your cab mounts

 

Forgot to measure before or after... from what everyone says on TW the OME kit provides about 2.5" I think so that is what I am assuming.

 

edit: and the fender should I cut it all up before I get the tires installed?

 

Is that full lock?

 

If you have after market UCA's... you need more caster in your allignment... But even with more caster your ganna have to remove your mudflap and chop some plastic, and maybe the cab mount....
(caster should be close to 2.8)

 

I think the pic is showing the tire straight ahead. When turned it was hitting the front and back hard, to hard to drive without trimming.

 

Straight ahead would be out away from the mud flap by at least 1.7 inches

Ya, thats one part I dont recall for sure, where the position of the tire was in my pic, my bad. The more I think about it the more I think the tire was about 3/4 turn.

 

So did you guys trim your fenders before tire install? From what I have read it seems everyone can get their trucks home no problem and then trim fenders,... as needed. Cab mount necessary for rough off-roading. I didn't make it that far, never left the shop - wondering if I chickened out but wow it was really pulling on the fender plastic.

 

I go my knife out and trimmed right in the parking lot of the tire shop...

It was a must for me!

Here is my alignment with oem uca 265/70/17 and lift. Good or bad dont know but I have no vibs or pulls.
