Noisy muffler

I just bought a new 4 cylinder 2011 4 x 4. Awesome truck. I think I'm going to love it. The only issue is the exhaust seems loud to me. I used to drive a 2003 Dakota. With the stock muffler it was very quiet. Replacement mufflers had a little bit of noise associated with them but not as loud as what I am getting with the Tacoma. When I did the test drive I immediately though that it was a little loud but I new Tacoma was what I wanted and just assumed they were on the noisy side. Now that I am driving it more it is becoming annoying. It is not an exhaust leak. The noise definitely coming out the tailpipe. Are Tacoma's normally on the noisy side? Is there only one muffler that comes with new vehicles or is there a high performance exhaust package that may be on the noisy side? I mentioned the noise to the salesman and he indicated that the noise was normal and that it occurred because it was a 4 cylinder engine. It just sounds louder than what I would normally expect. Has anyone had similar impressions?

I put a stainless exhaust tip on mine that extends the exhaust a little more beyond the bedsides and seems to eliminate any reverb off the truck.

 

That's what has me wondering if what I have is normal or not. Its just loud enough that it may be what most people prefer. I'm going to look into some of the suggestions given earlier in the thread. I think I am going to want to do something...

 

You might be right. The noise level may well be there by design. Me no like though so aftermarket may be the solution.

 

The noise may be part of a reverb affect. I see that Advance Auto has some cheapie chrome ones. I may buy one and bolt it on to see if that helps.

 

Tips do change the exhaust tone. Angled cut tips will give a different tone as opposed to a straigtht cut tips.

 

I had an exhaust on a 350 V8 (stock SLP with Borla muffler) and hi-flow cat that dipped down and straight out the driver rear (about 6-7 inches off the road) in the airstream and it scavanged the exhaust out of the engine so well it was almost like having a supercharger!
