don't apologize, i said that kind of rudely...bartending and serving can both be very stressful. I was just wondering if there was something that made bartending worse.

well where I work the bartender has 8 tables as well as the bar top to look after. they have by far the most stressful job in the restaurant. most places aren't like that though.

oh okay, then that definitely is stressful. Where I work there's the bar and 4 tables that 2 bartenders cover. The servers however have 10+ tables each in their sections.
But then you have to consider that on busy weekend nights the bar is usually full plus they have to make a shit load of drinks for all the servers....so yeah, i'd say both jobs are very stressful. depending on the day of the week, one is probably more than the other :)

That's great that you had a very pleasant experience and sounds like the server did an excellent job. I have never been to a Bone Fish Grill location.

But in my logic, he should have been kissing your feet after getting even a $20 tip. I am assuming you had a party of 3 - 5 peeople max? He didn't have to do any more work than the single mom at Denny's would have done. It is not hard work and only takes 10 seconds to deliver a glass of beer whether it costs a buck or 9 bucks.

It is not my fault that the Bone Fish Corporation charges customers $9 for a 50 cent beer and then refuses to pay it's own workers properly.

10 tables!! I had 7 sat at once yesterday at one point and I thought I was going to die lol. I somehow managed to keep everyone happy though and the tips at the end of the night were most definitely worth it.

oh and the bartender always makes us pour our own beer and wine (we don't serve liquor) which I don't mind.

This is true, he may have only deserved a $20 at most but he will remember you if you give him more, meaning maybe he will make your next visit worthwhile by paying extra attention to your table or if he's willing to risk his job, maybe a free appetizer or something lol.

I go into a resturant planning to tip 15% and .. if the server meets or exceeds my exspectations i will tip up to 20%+... but if a server gets my order wrong cant keep beverages full it can drop low enough im looking for compensation my self.

I know somethings are out of the servers hands, but if you order something a certain way the server should be able to see that it is wrong and fix it before it gets to you. If the server has to appalogize because the kitched made a mistake and he is getting it fixed kudos to him. If i have to remind him that my food is wrong and send it back, its his now his fault. I dont care if he has multiple tables or not.

I used to be a server and I know times can be tough, but you have to adapt and over come and make your customers happy. Happy customers tip better.

Also with what is being discussed above I agree.. If they want to charge $10 for a hamburger and $5 for a beer.. Im not tipping $3 just bc its 20%.. when the food is over priced.. bringing me a burger and a beer is not worth $3.. extra.

As I stated before, I don't want or need any extra attention when it comes to restaurants. Heck I don't mind going to refill my own glass even.

If I dropped $150 (including tip) on a meal for 4 as mentioned above, I would expect the server, the managers, plus the district managers to remember me and I ought to get a free share or two of the company stock on top of that..

    Ha! Ha!

The things required to pull bitches
I gave my waiter a 10 dollar tip last night. Meal was 7 bucks (happy hour). I did it because my girl ordered brownies and when dessert came the waiter told us they just sold the last piece. So instead they comped us our meal. I thought the waiter deserved it because she comp it for us.

And about the stress factor of the job does anyone else see the same irony I do?

I agree fully that what separates the OK from the good/great servers is ability to perform everything without mistakes when the place is crazy filled customers. This would be very stressful to me if I had to do it.

But I'm sure a lot of folks don't think of that when it comes to tipping.

Therefore it is during the times when ol' Shenanagins Corp. is raking in the most cash hand over fist, that they are leaving their best employees the most overworked, underpaid and stressed out.

lol yeah 10 tables is our average. I remember one lunch shift I had 14 tables inside and 10 tables outside in my section..during the lunch rush 8 of my tables inside and 6 of my tables outside were full, i thought i was going to cry at one point. but everyone left happy, and thats all that matters.

The difference between where I work now and where I've worked in the past is the servers have a lot of support. we have runners and back servers that help out a ton when we are slammed. and also all of our managers are really hands on and don't hesitate to jump in and help you with anything.

Another thing thats different is we have a tip share system. All of the servers tips are pooled at the end of the shift, everyone is tipped out, then the rest is split evenly among the servers and we get it in a "tip check" at the end of every week. Definitely sucks sometimes, but it is what is is.

well thats pretty stupid especially if you had a bunch of big tops all day that had large tips. just the bartender gets tipped out 1% automatically and we keep the rest. I always give each of the cooks a few bucks at the end of the night too though if they did a good job.

oh and +1 to you AFTundra

Yeah if you only look at the negative part of the tip share it sucks but at the same time, it keeps everyone working as a team, you don't have to worry about people being greedy with how many tables they get and if your section is really slow- you still get a good amount of money. Don't get me wrong, I still miss taking cash home at the end of the night, and getting all the money I earned. But after doing it this way for 5 months, it's not that bad and I still make at least $2000 a month just in tips.
