hella 500 wiring diagram???

anyone have a hella 500 wiring diagram that i can take a look at or print up?? my hella 500 box and instructions got thrown away a little while back. i know how to wire them, but im wanting the instructions to see how i gotta wire the relay(never used relays before on anything!!) so i dont smoke my switch!! any help will definitely be appreciated!!

Hey man, relays in general are really easy to wire up. They should have a wiring diagram on the relay. What are you trying to relay it your Hella 500s to? Pretty much the 12v relay will have 4 connectors.

Relay Terminals:
30 - Power In From The Battery
85 - Ground To Chassis
86 - To Switch
87 - Power Out To Lights

Make sure you put the 15A fuse between the battery connection and #30 on the relay.

One side of your lamps has to be grounded

hey guys....very helpful, thanks alot!! one question though, my relay has two posts stamped 87, which is power out to lights. does that mean i need to have one coming off each of those posts and going to each light separately.....kinda like one of the 87 going to left light, then other 87 going to right light??? or can i just loop the lights together(the way i would normally do it) and only use one of the 87 post???

the way i normally run lights is, from the switch.......one wire goes to battery with a fuse(hot), the other from switch goes to the lights, then the ground on the lights i usually run to the frame or back to the battery. how much different is this as opposed to how i will wire them with the relay?? thanks again fellas!!

 

Is this the Hella oem relay? the lights are usually spliced togeather and then to #87, but i guess if you have 2 #87's you could put one on each terminal. using the relay is better than wiring it direct to the switch.
I always use a separate ground, not the battery

 

Is there a post labeled 87 and the other labeled 87a? If so it is a single pole double throw relay (SPDT). See the following link for details. You would normally use the normally open contacts (87), meaning you would wire both lights to the post labeled 87. You would not use the 87a contact.

hey man, yeah, this is the relay that came with the 500's. i'll probably loop the lights together, then just run one wire to the 87 post. and as far as the separate ground......i will use a chassis ground more than likely.

 

nah man, i checked. they are both just labeled 87.

Just to be clear...you still have to ground the relay. You will have a wire attached to all 4 relay terminals. You can ground your lights to a separate chassis ground at the front of the vehicle though.

 

wiring is fun ain't it?!?! i have a wire going through my back window and through the bed to my back bumper, maybe i'll tuck it onto the frame someday like i was supposed to...but for now i have 7 inches of snow sitting in the bed

 

yeah, im gonna ground the relay to the battery, and i will ground the lights to the frame near the front of the truck somewhere, so there isnt lookin like a spaghetti factory!!

 

You bet it is. There is nothing more fun than tearing your truck apart and wiring stuff up only to find that you screwed up somewhere and spend the next hours scratching you head trying to find out where the hell you went wrong....God I love new projects.

 

yeah....new projects are fun fun!!! i installed my bull bar and the hellas on it back in august i think.......and im just now getting closer to having time to wire them up!!!

 

Yeah, hopefully santa will bring me a bullbar for christmas. I plan on putting some KC slimlite 130w long range lights on there.

yeah.....i will soon as i get a chance to man. i was looking at the kc slimlites....man those lights look good. if i hadnt already got the hella 500's....i would have definitely got those. they are even guaranteed to not burn out for 23 years....now thats awesome.

haha amen bro amen...wiring problems are the worst and the most fun at the same time, cuz anytime it comes up in a story, you start off saying "so i had to find a bad wire" and everybody just hands you cash because they feel so bad for you. it's a huge sob story ya know lol

 

i had a pair of the PIAA lights, i believe they were 525s or 530s...somewhere around there, but they had the white driving lights with yellow fogs built in, as well as a white LED when the lights werent on and they were great while they worked but i had a damn bulb burn out after 3 months for no reason. i just replaced a fog bulb on my 07 taco too!!! entire filament blew apart inside the bulb for some reason
