hey guys. my buddy just recently picked up a 1997 4 runner with a stripped pinion gear in the rear. and i mean there's not a single tooth left on the gear. the crown gear is still all there but a bit burred up. We're trying to figure out what gears are in it to buy new ones. i wasn't sure if there was a way to tell by something on the door tag or buy counting the teeth on the crown and pinion. i know when we sent the VIN to Toyota they said there's a few different gears for that VIN and we would need to figure it out...

    any ideas?

i know there were at one point 10 teeth on the pinion gear if that helps...

    thanks

Count the ring gear teeth (or what's left of them) and divide. My guess in 4.10

Does anyone know if a rear housing or atleast the pumpkin and diff work from a Tacoma with the same gear ratio?

If it is 4x4, you can rotate one front wheel exactly twice with the other one stationary on the ground, and count the revolutions of the front driveshaft.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
There is an axle code on the door tag. In this case, the G144 = 4.88

his axle code is a04a. but im getting a few different codes on the internet on different sites.

its a 1996 4 runner. v6. 4x4 with electric locking diff. some guys are saying if it has the electric locker and its a v6 it has 4:30 no question. others are saying that the door tag is saying it has 4:56. i just need to know for sure before ordering anything. and also i cant find any 4:30 instock anywhere online or local at all.
