See? I think this shows that it's not so much technology but the person behind the technology that makes the picture. I love that you used what you had to make a great picture.

    Please read rule #1: http://www.danheller.com/tech-intro.html

Settings from his time of day relative to the angle of the sun and the angle he pointed to the sky to take the shot may be hard to duplicate.

haha oh lord, no I am in no way trying to figure out how to duplicate him, and although photography is a continuous learning process, I wouldn't exactly call myself a beginner :p

*edit* looking back at it, it did come off as rather noobish sounding, my bad!

so, sorry if I ruffled any feathers no harm intended :proposetoast:

Not at all - no harm

I see that question asked a lot online. Think of it this way, if you're learning one way how to do this photography thing and you get some random settings online from a picture you saw - it might mislead you and throw you in the wrong direction.

My advice, stay in Manual mode and never look back.

Two things. Install an EXIF plugin for your browser--most of the time, if you want to know, you can get the settings right from the photo (unless it's been stripped). "What settings" is one of those questions that for a picture like a flying airplane or sports shot helps people understand how to get motion blur or sharp images but for a landscape, the answer doesn't really mean as much.

    Always have, always will :p

BUT Ian has a good point: for speed shots it could be helpful to at least have some grounds to work with. For example consider these two pix:

Since this first one, the car was moving very fast, I could use about 1/125 shutter speed and still get the motion blur

But with this next one, being Auto-X (with cones), the car was moving alot slower compared to the first. Thus I used like 1/60 or something along those lines to get the same effect...

...but i doubt most of us need a lesson on speed photography :p

shooting what? Of the two I would think shutter priority would be more useful that AP... but that depends on what you are shooting... ?

    Check this site out: http://community.automotivephoto.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3864&highlight=slow+panning

Chris Clark and John Thawley are 2 of the many on there that kick ass with slow pans (I'm talking 1/30 shutter with LeMans cars zipping past you)

One more thing - when I used to shoot Auto-x, I'd watch one or two cars go through the course before deciding on which part of the track to focus on. I'd usually wind up using my primary angle on a turn where the vehicle comes towards me. I did that for the 3/4 angle of the car, and the possibility of the car breaking loose. Here's an example:

    And someone breaking loose:

try different genres: when I get bored, I try something new. Recently I have been going for rustic, western style photography. That'll get old soon enough and then idk I may try some kind of colorful winter sports stuff.

For me its about variety, not in place but in style of photos =]
