looking for a new drive shaft

I am was told i need to replace my drive shaft on my 2007 tacoma offroad double cab truck. The dealer want 838 for the shaft and 100 for the ujoint.

 

I have a one piece driveshaft from Tom Wood's driveshafts waiting to go on the truck when I get a lift. I got it a long time ago when I had my '07. I had them make it for a 2" to 4" lift cause I plan on getting OME Dakars in the back. I think it was $400 for it but that was with a group buy discount. Anyways, if you get one like mine, it will be cheaper than what the dealer wants to charge you and of higher quality.

 

I agree....paid 180 for a Jeep shaft & about 350 for a Bronco 2 piece shaft at a local place.

 

Just curious, who told you to replace the drive shaft and why?

i took it to a guy that does all my bug stuff. He showed me the rust and cracks in the ujoint and the driveshaft had a lot of free play in it when it is in park and some other tell tell sign like I am getting a vibration from the rear in first and second gear clicking sound when i drive real slow

 

sounds like a u joint rather than a whole new shaft

 

i can always take it to another shop and get a second opinion

 

That sounds like just a ujoint or two, or three, but not a reason to get a new driveshaft

 

x2, that's exactly why I asked... seems like it'd take something drastic to call for a complete drive shaft replacement unless you're looking specifically to eliminate the carrier bearing.

 

I just replace my drive shaft i found a web site call toyota part source these guys are cheaper and fast check them out have everthing and very helpful

 

Wow, Tom Woods ... that's the third time I've heard that name in a week. I guess he's good then.
Just pulling out the other half of my rear drive shaft. Dropped the front half off today at a drive line shop - he said he needed both halves - Duh. I'm hoping for a good price. I asked about a 1 piece and he said nope. Hangs too low, but I don't think so. Even with only a 3" lift it would be up and out of the way.
A guy on eBay makes nice ones, but doesn't have them built yet, so I'm stuck trying to find a good alternative.

Did you get a second opinion ? $720 is a lot of money to pay for something you didn't need.

 

it was the drive it was crack the the joint on the u joint
