33x12.50x15 rubbing uca!!

So I put some 33x12.50x15 tires on my stock 15" wheels and they fit fine expect the rub on the uca. I was thinking of wheel spacers, but I REALLY DONT want wheel spacers and I dont have the money for new wheels. So I was thinking maybe I could grind off just enough of the very end of the uca to clear the tires (maybe 1/4" - 1/2") and re-weld a steel plate to patch it back up. Is this a bad idea for mild offroading? It will only be for now untill I can afford new wheels and light racing uca. Has anyone done this before?

Pretty much at all times. If I were to hit the smallest bump in the road, yea, rubbing alot. I dont see how its a bad idea, all your doing is alil grinding and alil welding. Its not like your cutting it in half. People cut and reweld the body mount on 2nd gens just to run 33's, how is this so much different? I wouldnt think it is messing with the strength since your barely grinding after the upper ball joint so it just extra metal?

 

Why do you suppose toyota put that lil bit of extra metal right there. Does it feel like they put it there just to keep you from running 33/12.5-15s on stock wheels?

It is ridiculous to compare the body mount chop to cutting and grinding on your suspension pieces which has the potential to weaken said piece.

Have you seen what happens to a tacoma that looses a wheel at speed? You are proposing modifying a peice that holds your wheel on.

 

Wheel spacers...... a lot safer than trimming the UCA, me thinks.

 

I would just get wheel spacers until i could afford new wheels. i deffinatly would not cut anything off the UCA

 

Dude there is nothing wrong with a good set of wheel spacers. Spidertraxx and Allpros are great spacers. I am runnign 1.5s on my truck, i love them and i offroad and drive the piss outa my truck sometimes. Have held up great. The way i see it if LT guys can run them and hit big jumps and have no probs..im sure you will be fine.

Cutting the UCAs is a BAD idea.

Your options are basicly this:

-Wheel spacers, cheap and easy to do, get a good brand and you will be fine, can always resell once you have funds for other options

-New UCAs Pretty pricey and no gaunette it'll solve your issue. Nice all around upgrade tho..

-New rims with proper back spacing. This can be about the same at the UCA or really expensive.


Take your pick.

 

It was just an idea. I was researching and saw that it HAS been done. And (I THINK) that I read that someone actually does this to stock uca's from a 4runner? and shaves it so you can run wider tires and sells them. So I figured if it has been done before, wouldnt hurt to keep it as an idea for research. I just dont know how it will look with spacers. Its already wide as hell..

 

I was compareing the body mount chop to the uca because the way I would cut it (if I was going to do it), would be just like a body mount chop. Shave it and plate it back up. Not in a way saying, "if you can do it to a body mount, why not a uca? I understand they are both completely different ball parks, just trying to describe how I would cut it, if I was going to do it. Sorry for the misunderstanding Im exhausted so Im not very clear right now.

 

You have Allpro spacers right? I thought I saw that in one of your post.

 

Haha jk man I hope you figure out what you decide to do. I love wider tires. By the way something like this could happen if you decide to do something like trim the uca....

 

Get some 1/4" spacers from Wheelers if it is close, but doesn't require 1" spacers. They are super cheap too. It might be enough to clear the UCA.

 

unless you have balancing issues. no place i've ever delt with will try to fix a tire balance issue if you have spacers.

it's best to save up and get wheels with the correct backspacing.

 

If you are using the stock wheels that is a mistake right off the bat and I'm surprised a reputable tire shop even mounted them, not hard for those tires to pop right off the rims. I might have went with 33x10.50.15's on those rims or at most 32x11.50x15, but now that you have them save up and get wheels the proper width and the proper backspacing.

 

pretty sure i've read before you need at least 16" rims

 

are the stock wheels only 7" wide? ...if so, you are correct. ...need at least 8" to run a 12.5" tire
