The city I live in doesn't do volunteer. Theres a civil service exam for fire coming up in April. I'm going to take it. I graduate in May. . . Thinking about just doing EMT training or something to get some experience as a first responder, maybe that will help with getting into a fire department. Do you have any other suggestions, like possible training or experience, that could help me get into a fire department?

Anything in particular for education? or just having a degree in general? I think I'm going to register for EMT training as soon as I graduate in May. . Good luck with getting paid for it, I hope that works out for you.

Yes, I have thought about it. When I graduated high school I was in really good shape and almost did it. I live a mile away from Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, MA. . . But I was dumb I HAD a girlfriend that didn't want me to go into the military so I took the college route. . Then we broke up, and I got another girlfriend, started working a night shift, started college full time and got fat again. . If I get myself into the shape I want to be in by my college graduation this coming May I might enlist. . But only if I can get the job I want, which would be fire protection or something mechanical. I remember even back when I was thinking about joining three/four years ago Westover didn't have many openings, mostly loading cargo on the C5;s that are based there and junk.

62 years old, both knees scoped X 2, need a replacement on the left one so running is out.

Used to power lift- have a torn rotator cuff and arthritis in most joints.

Now, alternate between machines (nothing over about 220 lbs), an elliptical machine for cardio, and walking when weather is good.

Could stand to lose about 30 pounds, but feel pretty good, all things considered. Spent 36 years as a Cop, only seriously injured once, retired from the military, active duty during 2 wars- never hurt, thank God.
