I might be missing it, but I see neither of those part numbers on their site. Might wanna call them and make sure.

Just talked to Marco, he'll be sending the longer 5100's out tomorrow, and said they will probably work. *crosses finger* I've never dealt with a business that deals with their customers like DSM. . . I work at Home Depot, and we're supposed to be the top of the line in customer service, but DSM puts us to shame lol. We'll see what happens :D Thanks Marco and Sonny!

Hello, thought we would put in our 2 cents on this. We did have these C478 shocks listed as being OK for 0-2" of lift. We haven't seen problems of this nature from this shock or had people complaining; it's been a good product.

We all know that the Tacoma rear leaf springs will droop for miles if you unhook the shocks (the shocks are the limiting factor of the rear suspension) and if you put a shock on there that matches the full droop potential of the springs it would more than likely be too long when fully compressed and bottom out before you hit the factory bumpstops (not good) unless you've modified the rear shock mounts or bumpstops. So in certain conditions off road you could top out any shock that is listed for this truck. We've all been out wheeling and seen one tire hanging in the air before, that's not an uncommon occurence (in fact, a lot of us work to get ourselves IN that position!:D). That's simply the shock topping out.

Marco and Sonny of DSMS are right on with their measurements of these Bilstein C478 (14.02" x 22.94") and B110 (16.34" x 27.28") shocks on their site. We personally don't know if B110 would bottom out before you hit the factory bumpstops but are not passing any judgement on another vendor if they have checked it out. We think we should humbly follow suit and list the measurements of the shocks for customers to make their own judgement.

Just as a point of reference, the OME N182's that are made to go with the 2.75" lift CS047R Dakar rear springs are listed as 352mm x 608mm; if we did the math correctly that's 13.85" X 23.93"; only 1" longer than the C478.

This has been good feedback and we appreciate our Tacomaworld customers very much.
Please contact us with any questions.

I must say that this has been the most positive thread I've seen on TW in a while. It's great to see 2 different vendors come out and help us all like this. And props to DSMS for stepping up for the OP

Anyone in San Diego with a 2nd Gen, with a 2" AAL want to give us your truck for a day?

We will happily cycle the suspension and get the real life measurements at full bump, and test fit all 3 (Both 5100s + OME N182s) shocks, and post the results!

This is a great thread and I learned a lot.

But I am still not sure what the best solution is for those with 2" of rear lift. From what I understood, the short 5100 is too short while the longer 5100 is likely too long. Maybe I am jumping the gun as it seems like DSM is planning to test.

    UPDATE:

So I finally got the chance to take some pics of the new 5100's. I haven't had time to wheel with them yet, so I don't know for sure yet if they're collapsed length is too much, and I don't have any measurements/pics of flex. The new, longer, 5100's are much beefier than my old ones. They even require larger bushings/washers. The old hardware DOES NOT fit the stem of the new ones. Here are some pics.

Thanks again DSM for your excellent customer service. I didn't make this thread expecting any sort of refund, but you stood up and made things right w/o question. I work in retail, and know about customer service. Y'all are top of the line!

Quick question: I just ordered the set of stock 5100's (front and rear) from DSM today. I've got the TSB rear springs and would like to add an 1.5 AAL. Will these rear 5100's work for this. The application will be 90% highway and 10% flat north Florida logging paths and dirt roads.

That setup is roughly 2" over stock once the TSB leaf settles. You should be fine with the 5100's. The question of longevity comes into play when you are 3" over.

    Toytec sells Shock Extenders.
"Adds 3" length to shocks for extra flex off road.
Works great with 2 to 4" rear lift. Sold in pairs."

I'm about to put the 1.5 TSB AAL in the rear with 5100s, should I get these extenders? This thread got me freaked out about messin up my 5100s now that I'm goin with more lift. I got all four at once previosuly from DSM and did not remember seeing the long shock version.

    Thanks!

any undates on this... would love to have shocks that provibe full travel of my leafs... cant believe how much the 5100's restrict the down travel...

do the 3-4" lift RCD ones work? do you need bigger bump stops with these?

After all the research I'm still not sure on which 5100's to get for the rear. I have the TSB leaf pack and got them re-arced with an AAL for increased load capacity. After settling the rear is 2-2 1/2" above stock with a camper shell on. I want to put 5100's at 1.75" in the front. DSM recommends the longer B110's for the rear, Wheeler's recommends the regular C478's and says you don't want the rear to hit the bump stops before the shock is fully compressed, the shock should be the limiting factor. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Don't know if this was a mis-type, but should state that the Bumpstop should hit before the shock is fully compressed (bottomed out), The droop is limited by the shock....

Get the ones that will still allow the bump to make contact and get some limit straps to keep it from yanking on the shock every time it hits full droop, this will save your shocks from death...

If wheelers advise is as listed above stay away from them, that kind of garbage misinformation is just getting them to get you to buy another shock from them after you break it...

For the record, heres what I would be doing, I would be measuring stock bump distance eye to eye on the truck not the shocks, then measure full droop, bilstien makes alot more than 1 shock, you can actually use part numbers and lookup compressed and exteneded lengths for shocks and find one with the correct pin and eye setup for our trucks. Its alot more leg work but in the end you can achieve better results.

we used to do this all the time when I was in the parts bis. Its all about doing your homework.

Sorry Johnny, you are right, you did say "should hit before." I am just having a hard time knowing the best option and I want to order the shocks. The logic explained for each seems sound but it still seems like the short rears are a tad too short and the longer B110's a tad too long for a rear end that is about 2" above stock. Hoping someone has some expertise on this...
