Installed Ultra Gauge on '95 Tacoma

I saw this on a 2nd Gen thread, so I thought I'd give it a try. This device is pretty cool. You can customize it a million different ways which is nice. I was a little hesitant to buy it because I wasn't sure if it would work in a 1995 Taco, but sure enough it works.

Last week, two days after I bought my Tacoma, I had a CEL appear. The Ultra Gauge tells me the trouble code, and also allows you to turn off the CEL.

This has an alarm feature too, which will alert you when any of the monitored sensors rise above or drop below a customizable level. So if the engine temp goes above xxx degrees an alarm will sound, if you exceed a certain speed an alarm will sound, if your O2 levels are too high an alarm will sound...and so on.

I'm not sure I like to location of it on the dash, I may move it. So far I'm pleased with it.

 

weird, since obd2 didnt start till 96, so not sure how it works on your 95..

obd1 is on the earlier models, but its a plug under the hood usually.

 

I've got the OBD2 port right under my eBrake handle. Yeah it's weird, but awfully nice!

 

thats not entirely true obd2 wasnt required until 96, but yeah i used to have a 95 taco and it also had obd2

 

then you probably had obd1..Im thinking the fords are under the hood, my 89 4runner had OBD under the hood, but it was those stupid blink codes..jump the two pins, and count the number of flashes the light made.

I hated having my Sirius radio in that spot so I moved it over to the left and its a lot better there, give it a shot!

 

TIPICOTACO, that's where I originally wanted to place it, but the window suction adapter has a bendable shaft that's way too long for it to go on the left. I might be able to shorten it though...

 

I see what you're sayin. Does the cord plug into the unit itself or the "holder"? cuz if it goes directly into the unit mayb you can find a different "holder" like the ones they have for cell phones and such, or velcro like some other folks have done just thinkin outloud..

 

The unit has a back-plate which is fairly thin, no more than an inch deep, that clips onto the unit and the suction cup adapter shaft is probably 7" long. Honestly I haven't really given it much thought on what some other options are. I'm actually ok with the location, but I wish I didn't have a huge fricken suction cup on my front window. A clip that would grab onto the headliner might be nice, but again I don't want to take my eyes off the road and look so far up.

my 95 is obd2 too

 

no i had obd2 i got a cel one time and bought the tester kit for obd1 and i couldnt find the damn thing took it all back and looked under the dash and there was the obd 2 plug, obd and obd1 are the same thing

 

If you have a GPS you can mount the GPS closer to the pillar then wrap teh bendable mount for the UG behind it like i did mine, then just run all the wires under the dash!

Nope, OBD2 was standardized in 96, but MAFG's knew it was coming so most 95's and some 94's have OBD2.

And yes I know, this thread is super old.

 

Most 95 Tacoma are actually 95.5, so like Jake posted. Toyota knew what was coming. My 1995 is indeed a ob2.
Dark tangent can it read the tranny temp?

 

Ultra gauge doesn't read trans temp, scan gauge does though.
And the manual trans doesn't have a temp sensor, I don't know when the autos got them, but I think it was either 99 or 01.

 

Might have to pick one of these up. Ive seen it all over the forums but was always scared off due to the ODB1 OBD2 mix up. Never actually checked.. My 95 has OBD2 as well.
