I think we all know they dont live as long as humans, but this, by no means, makes them disposable. My Dogs are my familly, and I hold thier lives higher than most peoples. If they are sick, they see the best vet I can afford, and ASAP. If they are hurt, they are treated as if it were my Mom/Dad/Son/Dughter/Wife that were hurt.

I felt the same way about my first dog... then you get another dog after it dies and you feel the same way about that one.

What are you going to do when your dogs that you have right now die? Probably get other ones to "replace" it right?(I know, I know... how could you replace a family member!?)

You can never "replace" a loved pet. You can get others, to give them the love and affection they need.

That's exactly how I feel about the dogs I've had in my life...I'd throw myself between a bear and my dog if there was a chance of saving her.

Why the hell would you die for your dog? Why would you care if you saved it, if you are not around to enjoy it.

At this point, it seems to me that you are simply trying to stir shit up. Many folks on this site are very fond of their pets, past and present (including myslef), so I suggest you bug out of this thread.

I have nothing but love for dogs, mine or others but there comes a point when you have to think rationally, no?

Thats fine. But dont try to tell people that the way they view their pet is "the most ridiculous things I have ever heard". Either contribute to the thread, or GTFO.

Understood... I am still curious as to why they would throw themselves in front of a bear for their dog? If that is ask-able in here...

If there was a chance of saving her without getting mutilated I'd take that chance. I love my dog and would do anything I could to make her time here happy, safe, and enjoyable...call me crazy.

I would spend as much money as i possibly could to help my future dog (a dalmatian for sure) :)

It's about the quality of life that would determine whether or not i would spend the big bucks for it.

Earlier this year I spent $800 Had to put her down once she was diagnosed with Lymphoma - she was too far gone to try chemo on. If she'd been in better shape, I'd have done chemo in a heart beat.

For you guys with the pet insurance, where do you get it from?

I can't even imagine how much we spent on our Lab, Daisy. Over her 15 years she survived cancer surgeries twice, ate a glass Christmas ball, ate rat poisen and swallowed 5 rolls of pennies. The penny incident cost well over $2500 alone...yet we never gave a second thought to saving her. She brought joy into our lives every day she was with us.

And, we do have 2 other Labs now: an 8 year old Chocolate male and a 1 year old Black female. It's not a matter of replacing one that we lost - it is sharing our lives with animals that give us joy and companionship.

If you don't understand why we see them as companions and not just posessions, I'm not going to be able to explain it or convince you. To us, this is about committment and love - we chose to accept the trusted responsibility for these animals and understand that they will not live as long as we do. But, that doesn't absolve us from just accepting that they are going to die anyway so why bother spending money on vet bills?

It comes down to a basic outlook on the meaning of pets, on the depth of committment and responsibility. On one end of the spectrum, you have people who think that dogs are expendible - they fight them, chain them to trees or to outside dog houses, they may or may not feed them daily or give them water. In the middle you have people who see them as conveniences - but when they are no longer convenient, they are jettisoned. Then you have others who view them as a lifelong committment to care for, love and feed them.

Is any one right? I certainly have my own opinion...but my opinion is just that. If you don't get what makes me proud to be on the end of the spectrum that views them as a committment, I will never be able to convince you that your position is wrong.

I help out with several dog rescue organizations around the country - these folks save hundreds of dogs every week who ended up in situations where people did not consider them a priority or deserving of that life-long committment. Many of them are injured or sick because their owners opted not to care for them - to turn them over to a shelter or, worse yet, to dump them alongside a road. If you can't make the committment - both financially and emotionally, please dont take a dog into your life.

In the end, it's about passion, caring, and an understanding that we, as the people who opt to take them into our lives, have a moral responsibility to care for them.

    Just my own $.02.
