I know I may get some grief about this from some folks, but I thought I'd start a new topic just because I haven't posted anything in a while.

Take a gander at this commentary: http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/02/11/martin.valentine/index.html?iref=mpstoryview

I tend to agree with Roland Martin here. It just seems like some folks spend way too much time/money planning for Valentine's Day to "make it up" to their significant other, but what about the rest of the year? Hey, I try to do something special on Valentine's Day, but I don't leave the rest of the year out either. What are your thoughts? I'm curious to see what we get.

My take is this. My Wife and I buy things for each other thru out the whole year. At least once a month, I get her flowers for no reason. We both are busy people, and though we do alot together, Valentines Day gives us a day we set aside, and hang out with each other. We dont fall for the comercialisim of the day, but we will go for a walk, see a movie, or what ever.

There's nothing wrong with Valentines day.... You can celebrate it however you want or not at all.

My husband and I have been married for 13 years. Although I like flowers, I hate when they die. I hate tossing them in the trash. I'd rather have a nice dinner or nice evening alone together..... We're old... and we tell eachother everyday how much we love eachother - so, it's Valentines day everyday (in a sense).

Valentines day, Birthdays..... are just 'another day' to us.

But that won't stop me from putting a request at the local radio station to play our wedding song, or dropping off one red rose at his car so he gets it when he's done work. Or sending him an e-mail with a special note....
(I'm on 2nd shift currently and I don't see him all week long xcept for when we're both asleep)

    I like that, Chris!

Ya, I just wanted to get people's thoughts on this day, since it is approaching and, like I said, to start some sort of post. I've been a slacker on TW lately.

    Thanks for your input!

That's great, Janster! You guys are pretty good role models for us all. I appreciate your input.

I'm pretty family oriented even though I'm not married myself, or dating anyone, but I just hear how so many couples I know struggle to keep things "fresh". Or that Valentine's Day is the end all be all of how the relationship might go...like everything is put on hold for that day alone. What about the rest of the year? Your relationship is lifelong when you're married and it's a daily thing...not just on Feb 14th every year.

see im the same way...i dont see any reason why you should be able to tell someone you love that you do every day...you should NEED a special day to do tell someone you love them or buy them flowers or stupid huge ass teddy bears...

i dont make a big deal out of it...never have...and i definately DONT go out to eat that day...WAAYYYY too crowded

The wife and I aren't big V-Day people, either. We go out to dinner, but usually the day before/after V-day to avoid crowds. We'll get each other a card, too, but normally not a gift.

We celebrate the anniversery of our first date instead of Valentine's day. It's 1 week later and we avoid the crowds this way.

My G/F and I like it as that we spend the whole day together and we use it as an excuse to stay somewhere away from home. Kind of like a date nite. I just booked a Inn with hot tub, fire place, and a view of the Ocean for the whole wknd. Bringing our own wine and enjoying the storm that is suppose to be great this wknd. :D

Good job making your first date the week after Valentines. Nothing more awkward than going on a first date as V-day approaches, then not knowing what to do that first year.

Id agree with the others who said that you should do nice things for your signifigant other all year long, not just on some special day.
I think Valentine's Day is great. Whats better than a day for people to show how much they love each other?

guess I am one of the lucky ones.... girlfriend cant visit during the week.... so I reek the benefits of day after Valentines Day sales... lol.... and this year she has the flu so I cant go see her.... but I may splurge a bit and head to the cemetary and get some flowers and bring them to her... lol jkjk... she hates roses so I get the cheaper flowers which is great cause my parents grow wildflowers in the garden... so I get pick of the litter.. lol all year round....
