Need advice ~ Drum Brakes

    I have been noticing a little more of a clunk when i let off the brakes to take off than i usually do, so i decided to have a look at the rear brakes, the drums look fine i think, but how much pad should they have remaining? I took off the passenger side drum and took some pics any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Rear Gate security Mod (although I seldom take my eyes off it) "Harsh Ride" Shocks and Springs TSB performed by "Me" New Cooper Discoverer AT3s 265/75R16s (fit well) Front "Tacoma Mike" light mod! Rugged Ridge floor mats. Bought another set of D rings and installed them in my wheel well. Perfect! Just hit the big 6000 Miles 12/19/11, Installed an alarm system to go with my factory power door locks 1/21/12
    right off the top Id say it looks like they need a good clean and adjust, Also add a dab of brake grease to the backing plate where the shoes ride.. Also possible your drums are warped.

    The drums look ok to me, and i tried to adjust them using some info i found on here, but couldn't get much adjustment.

    Eibach height adjust shocks in front, KYB monomax shocks in the back. Stock springs front and back. Level 8 MK6 10mm offset wheels on Cooper ATP tires (stock size)
    could use a cleaning, dont touch the shoe brake surface or the inside of the drums, brakes hate grease on friction points

    You still have almost half you pads left. There fine. Might just need adjusting?

    put everything back together, go into reverse and apply ebrake as you're rolling, that should adjust them

    Is that how you adjust them? Wow I didn't know that. I was tighting the thing on the back of the drum until they stopped freely spinning.

    Supposedly they're self adjusting. FWIW, I've never seen self-adjusting drum brakes that did as well self-adjusting as a manual adjustment did.

    Wouldn't hurt to bleed the brakes ether. I got a few bubbles out of mine from factory.

    what he said. I would also brush some neversieze(copper), or white lithium grease on the axle hub, between the studs, on the studs, and around the hub where the rust is. this will help you to able to get the drum off next time a little easier. I do it to the front hubs also. ever have to change a flat and the wheel is rusted on? it sucks.

    Softopper, All-pro bolt-on sliders, Tom Wood's drive shaft, Goodyear 235/85/16 Dura-trac's, SG, USA-Spec I-pod adaptor, Amsoil in everything
    That clunk could mean you have to lube the propeller shaft. Could also be a u joint. :cool:

    I checked the shaft before I posted and all u-joints seemed to be tight as a tick. I grease them at every oil change! Thanks for the tip though.

    My 96 made a noise like this. We couldn't ever figure it out. Then one day when I got a new muffler it went away. So mine was somewhere between the catalytic converter and my exhaust tip vibrating.
