Are any of the "off road" bumpers in the first post street legal/DOT approved? If not is there any other company that makes an aftermarket DOT approved bumper?

Liability is going to be assessed based on who's fault the collision is, not what bumper you happen to have.

At least in my state; check your local laws to be sure.

The easiest solution here is not to get in a wreck.

[IMG]Why buy when you can build and I did not have a $1000.00 to spend on a bumper. It only cost me $75 for the powder coat

Lets say someone crashes into you and because of your bumper they sustain a serious injury then I think you would be partialy at fault since an oem bumper is designed to absorb damage and crumple but a steel one would cause more damage

That's the stupidest mentality I can possibly imagine.

If some jackass runs into a line pole is the power company partially at fault because they didn't design the poles to have crumple zones in the event of an auto collision?

While we're comparing opinions, no, no help for you if you run into my steel and are at fault for the accident. Learn to drive better. If I hit you and I'm at fault then that's my problem. You aren't partially at fault for having a slowass tiny car that couldn't get out of the way in time.

The law can establish fault, and then all the liability can land on that person and their insurers.

I can fully see an INSURER not paying up due to the bumper if the crash was your fault. But if the crash was your fault, you're fucked with your insurer anyway. You either pay out of pocket, or pay the higher premium. So in reality, you're at no higher risk of being screwed.

The only time to worry is if you are in an accident and you or your passenger are injured because the air bags didnt deploy properly, then the insurance company could say something.

    State to state.

In NC, i'm in the clear because we do not have any bumper laws; I have confirmed this with a traffic attorney. The only real front end law is that your headlights must be no higher than 48" from the ground.

I agree with what you said, point was the PI lawyers could say something, insurance-wise not law-wise. For your car only.

Like you said in another post, Call a legal rep (PD or lawyer) and ask them.

I want to get something like the road armor bumper but I don't exactly have much of a bank account to afford something more than $400 at the most. Any help/suggestions? Or is that just too low of a budget?

Too low of a budget. If you had fab skills and equipment, you could probably purchase the materials for about that and put it all together yourself.

But any quality bumper off the shelf is going to run $700+.

You might be able to find a used one that needs a little love from a grinder and some paint for that neighborhood of a price...

Scan Craigs list constantly and I'm sure you'll find something.

Alternative, you could look into a tube bumper (prerunner style) for around that price (not sure tho)
