I got that tire thing on my dash board and it went away when I put air in the spare so - yes there must be a sensor on the spare.

I've had a spare stolen from my last pickup, but the wire was cut. I didn't notice until I needed it, which really sucked. Now I have a cable lock around the spare on my Tacoma so this doesn't happen again. Maybe someone took the time to wind yours down and then wind it back up?? Odd.

Hrm. Seems dubious. I've had some people say there is, others say there isn't. I'm going to drop my spare tonight and see what happens.

Well, It didn't go away when I filled the 4 on the ground - only when I filled the spare.

some of this, a little of that

IIRC they stopped putting sensors in the spares on the '09 and up. On my '08 there is, I have had to add air to get the light to turn off.

That's f'd up. Sorry to hear that happened to you.
Glad you have the TPMS in your spare. At least you KNOW you're missing your spare. Imagine being stranded with a flat tire and only then finding out it's gone.

TPMS in spare rocks. My '10 has one too. Got me all confused one day when the spare ran low on pressure lol

They discontinued the TPMS in the spare for 2010 models and later.

Ok, one guy says disabled on '09+. One guy says '10+. A completely different guy with a 2010 says it works...

Does anyone have anything definitive? I'm still going to drain my spare just to see what happens :D.

Sorry OP, kinda jacking your thread with this whole spare tire TPMS talk.... makes me wonder!!

This is what I am trying to do now. Anyone have a spare rim with the sensor they want to get rid of?

Sorry to hear about your missing tire, I to think it was stolen.
I think the TPMS must only do checks after you hit a certain speed and/or distance which would explain why it took so long to come on.

I run snow tires without sensors in the winter. If I don't drive far the light never comes on. It only comes on once I am about 20 minutes from home and the speed limit is over 100 km/h.
Not sure if it is the distance or speed that causes it to do a check, but I can literally go weeks without the light coming on.

All this leads me to believe it was taken when you were parked.

Yep...they stopped putting the sensors in the spare back around 09.
OP... your more than likely looking at a couple hundred for the wheel, tire, new sensor, and re-calibration. Sorry to hear it got stolen...run a cable around your spare and the frame and lock it up.

That's odd, because my '11 has a sensor in the spare. I've seen it in person when I dismounted the tire from the wheel, and I've seen it light up my dash when the spare gets low. Also, if you do the cable thing... make sure it's a damn good lock or a weatherproofed lock or when you need that spare you're gonna need bolt cutters too... One of my friends did this and the lock froze shut because of all the crap that had gotten in it from being underneath the truck.

Pretty sure that's how the TPMS works.. there's a delay before it scans and reports the status. You have to be up to a certain speed/and or length of time. See the manual for details, I'm not sure of the numbers right now.

Sucks you got ripped... Making me think about locking mine up somehow now..
