Brakes Grinding While In Snow

Hey guys,
1st post but very imoprtant imo
Today maryland got around 5 inches of snow so I wanted to have so fun in my brand new taco. But whenever I hit the brakes in snow I would hear this horrible grinding sound from the truck almost like a metal to metal grinding when I hit the breaks hard. I know the truck was probably slipping just a bit but this sound was ungoldy. IF I hit the brakes softly It would not make that sound. This sound was also very loud and noticable from inside the cabin. It didn't matter if I was in 2wd or 4 it would do this. It almost sounded like tranmission gears were grinding. Now it has abs and electronic brake distrubution and brake force but this sounded above and beyond that.
It really scared me that my 2 month old truck would make this horrible sound.
BTW I have a 2007 double cab tao TRD off-road with 2000 miles

 

My first thought would be the ABS system,mine was very noticable in our first snow yesterday.Did you feel any reaction in the brake pedal simultaneously?

 

It sounds like it was your anti-lock brakes, to see if it was find road that is not covered in snow and stomp the brakes, listen for screeching tires, also if you can pull a front tire off and check the rotor, that will tell you if you had metal to metal.

I can feel the reaction in the brake paddle but it sounds so bad. IT sounds like a metal rod is being driven into the transmission but in the brake

 

They salt the HELL out of the roads up here and I never heard that, pull a wheel.

 

That's what ABS sounds like when it works.

 

god my old car with abs was never this pronounced

how does you guys cars sound when there is major slippage and you slam the pedal all the way down

 

im voting that its a mix....a little of the salt on the roads maybe......but more than likely abs doing its job.

 

Is it driving ok, any noises while accelerating or highway cruising ?

 

it drives great no other problems.

Did you feel any of the noise through the steering wheel, i.e transfer ? did the steering wheel react to the noise ?

Well I bet it's the ABS, but I realize this is not your first car, you heard what you heard, maybe some of the sound insulation is missing which would make it sound like it's coming apart, make an appt. in the am, i am certain whatever it is it can be taken care of by the wrench at the dealer. While there have him go through the truck and have him point out the highs and lows, do and don'ts. Since this is my first Taco he did this for me and it settled my nerves.

 

We got snow again overnight and on my way home from work this morning I was thinking about your post.I intentionally turned of the fan and stereo and did some experimenting on some snow covered roads.What I discovered was with the brakes applied hard and the ABS system engaged fully,there were two distinct sounds.The first is a whirring that appears to coincide with the brake pedal pulse reaction.The second was a louder higher pitched sound that seemed to be coming from higher in the dash perhaps near the base of the steering column.My guess is that this is the actual ABS control unit.The harder the brake was applied,the louder the second noise seemed.
Again,I may be off base with what you are describing,but in my case all seemed normal,but it deffinitely sounded different than my last truck.I would imagine that every vehicle sounds and reacts uniquely when the ABS is activated,and this is what the Tacomas do.Incidently,I think we have the exact same model of truck as well...'07,double cab,4x4,TRD,two months old.On this note,I think concrete jedi is right on the money about having your dealer go over it with you.It may ease your mind as far as ..."this is what they do" vs "Oh,oh,thats not right".

Last evening I went to my Toyota Dealers New Owners Clinic and thats exactly how the Toyota Tech described how the ABS system reacts on slipery pavement
