why do you think you need 9 or 10 speed? My bike came with 30, wish it had 24 like my old one.

climbing...if i went to 10 i would most likely go to 2x10 or maybe even 2x9. the climbing here sucks....part of it is probably that im not used to the climbing but it would still be nice to have the extra 1 or 2 gears.

It's not much, but it's what I've been riding this summer. About a 95 or so Trek 800. I bought it new and rode it for a few years, then it gathered dust for a decade or so. Dusted it off, inflated the tires, good to go.

just keep in mind if you upgrade to 9 or 10 you'll also be buying dérailleur and shifter and chain, which u should change with new cassette regardless. Also the front rings will most likely have different profiling as well.

bone stock save for the block lift that came on it with the open country m/t.
so after a flat a couple miles out on the trail, I have purchased the necessary things for a "ghetto tubeless" setup. Anyone else tried this? I will let you know how it turns out. I bought two 20 inch tubes and some stan's sealant, cheaper than a kit, Hope it works just as well. :D

    No.

If you change do a different number of gears on the cassette, yes. But you should not need to change the rest if your cassette wears out.

You should change your chain when it gets wear. If you dont, you will start to cause wear on your cassette and chain rings. If/when those get "shark tooth" looking patterns, you need to replace the cassette/chainrings/chain.

A derailleur and shifter should not need to be changed with wear parts. They should be changed when they break, bend, or malfunction, or when you feel like an upgrade.

Ok. Anyway deral. needs to match number of cogs on cassette obviously and best policy is changing chain and cassette together. If not slight wear on one will cause slightly faster wear on the newer component...although I can't quote an evidence -based study on this statement.

I just recently went tubeless with stans and loving it! Albeit with mavic crossmax sx. I helped my brother do his "ghetto" and went easy and he is super pleased.
Just remember to extract the Stans goober and add new sealant every ~3 months. I learned this the hard way on Porcupine Rim with rain and lightning driving the point home. I'll never go back to tubes!!!!

Got to ride a $10K Specialized StumpJumper S-Works this weekend out on our trails. We had a race here in West Texas (the "Bent Wheel Bash") and Specialized brought their mechanic and 2 trailers full of both Road and Mountain bikes. Some sweet stuff. He just set each bike up for you and let you go! Here are a few pics I took at the event. Hope you like!

For a small West Texas town this is a fabulous ride. It is all-mountain type terrain. Lots of rocks and crags and boulder climbs. As well as rattlesnakes, cactus, skunks, badgers, raccoons, etc... It is a sweet 13 miles worth of track fitted to all levels of rider. There is a beginners loop, several intermediate areas and a couple of professional type loops. Always wear a helmet! The Bent Wheel Bash has become quite an event over its first few years. We have pulled in a bunch of the DFW, and Austin area riders. They have a Pro class with at least one nationally ranked rider this year. As well as several kids classes. Somewhere between 200-300 entrants this year!

These look cool but what's the point of spending that much on that bike?

Great stuff Shawn. Great pics too. I've done the 24 hours of adrenalin before and I'm sure this other event is just as fun.

I did talk to the mechanic at the bike shop and it is set up for 3x9. I thought I was going to have to do all that you listed but he was the one that told me to just replace the ring and then adjust it. I plan on replacing it and letting him adjust it to retain their warrenty.
