Upside down oil filter????

I dont know about the rest, but the 09 sport has the upside down oil filter on the top front of engine. Thoes of you who do your own oil change, how do you take the filter off with out pouring the oil all over the fan belts? is there a trick i am not getting? or is the oil supposed to drain back down and mine is not doing that? I have done a few oil changes and every time it makes a mess all over the place. Let me know what you guys do. Thanks.

 

theres a drain plug underneath your oil filter, on the metal lip. just get a piece of hose and hook it up...drains real easy

I solve the problem by having Toyota Technicians at my dealer do the change (and check over the truck) every 3-5 k miles... Nothing breaks on a Tacoma... maybe because of this, but it is a cheap way to keep the truck in top shape and documented for any warantee stuff if that ever happens. About $35 every 4,000 miles is CHEAP, in my opinion.

 

Prop an empty powerade bottle under that lil spout & no mess no fuss when done pour into pan.

 

It's the perfect filter location, and the drain cup has worked fine every time.

Having changed filters on plenty of vehicles where jack stands and/or an extra elbow are required, I am overjoyed to have the filter right there in front of my face when changing the oil.

Bend up an old coat hanger to hold a bottle under the little drain spout (and don't forget to put the rubber cap back on the spout when finished). Piece of cake.

 

I can't believe nobody has talked about the "pick trick".
(This trick applies to filters without a drainback valve.)


1. Take a pick or sharp pointy object and punch a hole on the top of the oil filter.

2. Wait a minute or so for the oil in the filter to drain into the pan.

3. Continue with your oil change procedure.


I hope I'm not sounding like an ass cause somebody else already said this...

 

Do these even exist anymore? If you could find one would you want to use it on an engine where the filter is mounted upside down?

An empty 1 quart oil bottle works just as well. Pull off the rubber nipple, and wedge the bottle down in there. Screw off the oil filter and watch the magic happen!

 

I think it's a great idea! I've only had my truck for a couple months, but I can't wait to change the oil when the time comes. So much easier than the previous models.

 

I do this except usually with a Poland Spring bottle, they're narrow and very flexible since the plastic is so thin.

 

i just hold a dixie cup or whatever you guys call those red plastic cups(solo) under the little spout and loosen the filter till the oil starts to drain out into the cup. Once it's done i replace the little cap and wipe off the oil cooler where the filter gasket seals. Then lube the new filter gasket with some fresh oil and install. Simples

 

Cheap until they leave the oil catch can in your truck, and your fan sprays oil all over the engine compartment................ Not to mention not even doing the work. Piece of mind doing it yourself and right is better then having a person being paid a bit over minimum wage do a shit job.

 

When I'm done with my beer, I put the empty can underneath the drain spout, and continue with the oil change.

 

Judging by your posts here on TW I assumed you were the type that did your own oil changes...kinda suprised me that you'd have a dealership do it. You do know you can do the documenting yourself and be well within the warrenty right?

 

The location for the filter was one of my favorite things about the truck (and showed the thought that went into the design). I don't know which I dislike most, filters horizontally on the block or open end up on the bottom. It seems I was always dribbling some oil with those.

 

I had the stealership do my oil changes til I hit 36k miles. No need to ever bring documentation into question while under warranty. Plus they were offering $10 oil changes which was cheaper than I could buy the supplies myself.

 

I just turn my truck upside down, unscrew the filter, let it drain. Screw on the new filter and turn the truck right side up again. Geez!
