Mazda's New "Skyactiv" Technology

I've been seeing the new Mazda commercials and they've been toutuing this new Skyactiv stuff.

Supposedly their new Gasoline motor has a compression ratio of 14.0:1, the highest of any passenger car? The Skyactiv technology is also implemented in the chasis and transmission.

The Diesel is pretty impressive too...Man, If Mazda can pull off a small diesel, Toyota can too. They already have the amazing 3.0L D4D from the Hilux, would it really need that much changing?

I didnt bother reading the article but Im assuming you have to run race gas in that gas ENGINE.

 

well maybe toyota should listen to their largest fan base in the us. the country they consistently screw out of their awesome little diesel mill and just offer one across the model range already lol.

 

I saw High Compression, and I instantly thought you'd definitely need premium gasoline.

i like mazda they make a nice little car i traded a loaded up 2010 6 speed mazda 3 i on my tacoma actually i sort of miss it. they make a great product imo

 

This takes things a step further still.

Long story short, with a 4 to 1 header design that has short runners, exhaust gases from cylinders will actually pressurize the manifold and hinder the exhaust from leaving the other cylinders completely. This means that the heat in each cylinder is much higher because it never truly gets rid of all the hot exhaust gas.

The 4 to 2 to 1 design (matching cylinders by firing order) fixes this problem because the exhaust gas would have to travel such a great distance down the manifold and then back up to get to another cylinder....it doesn't affect it. This leads to lower cylinder temperatures and will reduce knock meaning you don't need higher octane fuel.

Simple concept when you think about it but really great benefits just from being clever.

My friend had a speed3. Makes a TON of power with mods but you'll need to replace the fuel pump to get past a certain power point. The stock cam-driven one is wimpy as fuck. They do have problems with motor mounts (probably because they're really torquey) and there is an issue with carbon buildup on the piston heads causing rod knock and early engine failure. My friend's was replaced under warranty, luck him.

Yeah I've heard of a lot of them blowing holes in the block for no apparent reason.

 

my bronco had speed holes on the rockers. Naturally made by rust.

 

I have noticed, even from day one, a little bit of a knocking sound every now and then. That is about the only thing I have to complain about with the engine. I have the 4 cyl. 5 speed manual and that sucker can get up and haul some ass real fast. I drove the automatic and i was practically saying "yabbi dabba doo" and flinstoning it up the road. lol

Really curious to see where they take this new technology.

 

Mazdaspeed3 or normal 3? I thought the speed3 was a 6speed manual?

 

In the end, we buy Toyotas because of their powertrain reliability. There are some technologies Toyota opted not to use in truck engines for durability reasons. For example, direct injection is in the LS460 V8, but not in the GX460/Tundra V8 based on the same block. Hell, the LS400 4.0 V8 was making 280 horsepower 15 years ago, without VVTi.

 

I want diesel Tacoma!!!
and the 4-2-1 exhaust is pretty cool.

 

I believe most 4-cyl sport bikes have 4-2-1 headers available either OEM or aftermarket. They run pretty high compression ratios too.

 

I am going to look into getting a 5 door hatchback with the skyactiv 2.0 gas motor in a few years as a DD.

 

Don't see any advantage of the Mazda3 over a Subaru Impreza.

 

not awd so simpler. better MPG. Cheaper to buy.
