OEM Lug Nut Sleeve separation issue

I have an 2010 off road I bought last month. It has 13k miles on it now and it has the OEM wheels. I rotated my tires today. I noticed that a couple of the lug nuts tightened down on the studs fine but I can feel a little play between what seems to be a chrome "sleeve" on the lugs and the lug it self.

Is this common and will this cause any issues now or down the road?

I work as an apprentice at a Toyota Dealer and have only experienced this concern on one Toyota before. It was a 09 Camry that was driven in muddy parking lots.
I have experienced this same concern on many other vehicles with this type of lug and from what I can tell is that the sleeve expands from water that gets trapped around the lug. I would recommend washing your wheels asap if there is mud, salt water, wet sand, etc around your lugs..

 

I will say the lugs on mine are rounding off surprisingly quickly. Probably gonna swap them out soon because I don't want one fucking me over by getting stuck on the truck when I get a trail flat...

 

These are all possibilities... But after spending 30k on a truck it's frustrating to see substandard parts like this then having to go spend more money on aftermarket parts.

 

Get spline lugs and call it a day.

Good investment as far as I'm concerned. Plus it gives just that little bit of security. (Not much, but some is better than none.)

 

Whats the difference between a spline lug and other lugs

If you can send a link for the correct size/type that would be greatly appreciated.

I have the stock OR wheels now but I plan on getting aftermarket wheels in the future. Will I have to get different lugs for new wheels

Hit up fleabay. If you pay more than $30, you've paid too much.

 

I can't speak for all Toyota dealers, but my dealer will give away lug nuts, no cost. Plus u should still be under warranty, shouldn't u?
All I can say is that I don't have issues with these lug nuts on a general basis, just make sure they aren't over torqued, and use a 21MM socket.

In your defense, I don't think anyone would have thought to use their warranty on lug nuts.

 

I'll see if I can find it but someone posted a thread where the chrome 'shell' if you will peeled all the way off and there was a steel nut in the middle. He was able to completely peel away the chrome cladding and use the next socket size down to remove them from the truck.

 

Yeah, I heard you can do it. They aren't that bad yet but I don't want to have one separate while I'm on the freeway or out on a trail. I'll just go to the stealership and have them swapped out.
