Just remember that your puddle should be 2x the diameter of the electrode including flux. So if your electrode diameter is 1/4" your puddle should be 1/2". Just watch the puddle, if its not the width of two electrodes, slow down

You also need to be sure not to go so slow as to blow a hole in the material ;)

Yeah I'd say it was maybe 1.5x the diameter if that. I was so pumped to actually weld I didn't pay much attention other than to try and feed the stick down somewhat evenly. Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to put it to use tomorrow.

Got some good beads down today but I'm learning that lap joints aren't as easy. Any tips for this with stick welders?

I have used 100% C02 on really thick plate like 1"+ but 75/25 works just fine for me on the 1/4 to 1/2 I weld.

Nothing to write home about but it's getting better I think. I had one okay lap joint weld and the rest looked like poo

45° weld. Set heat to thicker metal and focus heat on thicker metal but enough so your puddle runs into the thinner.

Im looking to buy a mig welder in the future off of Amazon, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent one. I really would not want to spend more than $400. I know miller makes a good product but its over a grand for one
