sorry, couldn't resist that title. anyway, looking to have several parts painted oem black sand pearl (bushwacker fender flares, t-rex eyelids, hoodscoop insert) and called a fairly nearby maaco who stated to bring in the parts and they would give me an estimate. the local shops here tend to be pretty expensive and my spray-painting skills aren't up to snuff with what a shop can/should be able to do, so thought i'd give them a shot. any comments or suggestions fellas?:)

They will probably charge you $100 a piece. The quality is hit or miss. Ive had 2 cars painted at Maaco. I wasnt expecting much. The first one looked actually pretty good but the paint was very soft and chipped easy, while the paint job on the second car one was not so good(clumps in the paint and sections were painted so thin you could see the original coat of paint underneath. Cars were painted about 5 years apart at the same shop. Again these were beaters I just wanted to get some fresh paint on. If your truck is new and you are planning on keeping it for awhile shop around and see what you can find.

I personally would NEVER get anything done at maaco.. I've seen the work and paint they do (around here at least). Pretty good at cutting corners and not fixing things properly to fit a budget.

wow, wasn't aware their rep isn't so good. no experience with them. figured since these were simple, fairly small parts only, that it shouldn't be difficult to achieve a decent finish:confused:

I would be willing to wage the paint maaco uses is if that as good as the spray paint in my garage.

    ^^ This

My brother paid for better quality paint (materials) on his truck. They did a crappy job applying it (runs and dirt in paint) He sold the truck, but I see it driving around now five years plus later and the paint still looks the same as it did when he picked it up.

Grandma had her Cadillac painted there too. They did an awesome job applying the paint, it looked awesome for a year or two. But it was the base quality paint and it has oxidized fast.

I would go in and talk to the manager and just be very frank with him. Tell him what you expect and are willing to pay for and see where the conversation goes.

I'll see if I can dig it up on the fiero forum I use to frequent but this guy had a show car done by them and it was flawless. Granted he's known the painter there for years but not all maaco jobs are shit. Do all of your own prep and take them paint that much less for them to fuck up. That being said I've seen a freshly painted camaro out here that chipped if you looked at it wrong
