My Towing Mirrors

Well to tell you the truth I've only mounted one set.....they pivot up so you can see around your trailer. The dodgeish ones are in both pictures up and down.

I do appreciate you don't want me to look like a dumbass though.

Ohhh!!! They flip up to be tow mirrors? Neat...

No problem! I like to look out for other people no matter where they are!

 

Awesome mod! Personally, I don't have enough man skills to take on such a challenge. I went the cheap and easy route and purchased a pair of "Tow-N-See" mirrors. Totally awesome set of mirrors that just mount via suction to the existing mirrors. You use your power mirrors to adjust and bingo! Again, awesome MOD!

 

Do you get that much vibration with the tow n see?

 

Vibration was minimal at best; I was completely impressed with the tow-n-see's. I figured they were going to be disposable for the money but ended up being worth every penny.

 

I have been on the lookout for a decent set of tow mirrors also. After reading your mod I wondered if these tundra mirrors would be an easier conversion/better fit? Yours look and function great but I'm looking for a little less r & d and a little more bolt on Anyone?

just stumbled on this thread.... Awesome idea and ingenuity! I tow A LOT and some wider mirrors would definately be welcomed at times when towing enclosed trailers and such. I'd actually be somewhat tempted to try this in the future so thanks for the writeup!

What is the weight of the trailer you are towing?

Equalizing hitch, it ataches from the reciever to the trailer and uses torsion bars to preload the tounge.

05silverTaco how have your mirrors held up since you last posted? I'm thinking about doing the same. I haven't decided as yet if I'm going to. I have had a hard time in the past getting out of my garage by breaking the covering on my right side mirror by hitting the garage door frame backing out. W/ my wife's van and my Taco in the garage I have to get about an inch or two from the frame in order for both of us to walk in between both vehicles. It would be nice if there was a way to automatically move the mirror in while I drove into the garage like on some of those higher end cars.

 

Mirrors are as good as the day I put them on. Love the better visibility and the easy of folding in and out when towing. Also during cold weather it is nice to push the heated mirror switch and watch them clear them selves.

If your thinking of parking in the garage with mirrors like these, the mirrors are out about another 3 inches per side over stock when in the in position so you would have less room and more of a chance of hitting the garage door frame.

When you decided to use the Dodge mirrors, how did you go about in looking for those mirrors? Like how they would fit dimension wise? I might try the Tundra dual-arm towing mirrors (they telescope out and similar to the pic below) but I don't know how to see if the holes would line-up like the ones you have now.

 

First I checked what I call the triangle measurements, if you look at the mirror from outside you will see a triangle shape that goes up against the door frame. You have to have one the same size or smaller to fit. The late model Dodge mirrors have a triangle that is too large so are the late Fords. I found that the previous gen Chevy and Dodge had a triangle smaller than that of the Tacoma. The Tundra if I remember right is too large. But go out and take a tape measure with you measure yours write it down and then go visit a used car lot with different vehicles. You will find out what will fit. Then all you need to do is find the right type of mirrors that you would like.

Did you ever figure out the wiring for the control of you right side mirror? Check out my new (slightly used) TT. Just got it home last night from someone who had it for only a year.

 

"Cut gasket material out of a generic splash guard of about 1/8" rubber to this shape to fill mismatch of dodge to Toyota door frame."

Do you know if the old splash guards from our 2nd gen Tacos will work? I removed the last two remaining guards from my truck because I'm tired of replacing them every two to three years. Them just don't want to stay on and tear off somehow.

 

I just went to the auto parts store and got the biggest flat generic mudflaps that I found. Then cut out to the shape of the door area. If the old flaps you have are flat I don't see why they wouldn't work.
I never bothered with the wiring on the right mirror as it works fine for adjustment you just have to play with the switch a little. Like I said in my post I think the mirror that I got had the problem.
