I just saw on another thread that some Toyota dealers are engraving ID #s to reduce theft. If a cat thief takes it to a recycle yard, they'll see the engraving and can trace the owners. I'm thinking of doing this since even with skid plates, they can still get to the cats. I'm guessing we can engrave the VIN on there.

    Anyone done this yet?

This is a problem? I myself have never even heard of someone stealing a cat. Truck yes, cat no. Where do you live that this is even a concern?

Its become a pretty big problem all over the place. I can tell you from experience in my area, the scrap yards aren't going to be checking a cat for a vin. Number 1, they don't have any way to verify who's vin it is. Number 2, they don't have time and don't really care.

It would be an extreme long shot to have a vehicle part identified by the vin.

I have never heard of it happening around here.... Not to say it isn't happening, but I think it is pretty big problem in California. First time I ever heard of it was on this forum.

Who would steal a pet from a truck?... How would you engrave anything on it? It would be a real bitch to hold it still... And I didn't know you could recycle animals!

For those of you that don't know, yes cat thefts is huge problem especially if you're in California. I don't know why so much here but its the reality. Cats, tailgates, tail lights seem to be easy prey. What's worse is how many of these I see for sale on Craigslist.

They hit all the higher-ground clearance vehicles, Tacos, FJs, 4Runners, all of them. Not just Toys too of course.

There's a cat theft-reduction device too. I forgot what it's called, but its about $300. And our 2nd gens have two cats. Dang!

Wow! I seriously had no idea and I live in SoCal as well. Be just my dumb luck to get mine stolen now. I hate thieves. They has better be real quiet if they try it at my place as my 80lb pit is a light sleeper

My uncle owns and runs his auto shop where he fixes cars and also sells used cars. They have stolen at least 25 cats from his shop this year alone. High fence, barbed wire, security cameras, guard dogs....the works! They even went as far as killing one of his Rottweilers and also throwing them meat with poisons/sedatives to avoid detection. This is a major problem in large industrial cities.
