Rich, what LED's were you loooking at? I was thinking about doing some CREE R2 drop in modules in that area. They run about $13 each and I think I could get 14 of them in the scoop.

I like the P7 LED's but they generate so much heat it would be tough to do. I mean how would you heatsink right over the ENGINE lol

I was looking at the P7's. You can get them pre-mounted on a star PCB. My plan was to get a bunch with lenses and mount them to a heat sink under the hood. A small fan could be added if heating was an issue.
In your case $13x 14 lights is $182. You'd still need lenses, heat sinks, constant current driver, etc... Once you add all that up, the rigid lights start looking more and more cost effective (but you can't say you built it!).

I think my next project will be installing a small cluster of 1/2 watt amber LEDs between the tailgate and bumper and create a flasher circuit. Basically a higher power 4-way flasher. Either that or put an arduino on it and make a backwards version of knight rider.

I've also been eyeing the baja rack http://www.bajarack.com/toyota-tacoma but then I'll want to mount a 40" light on top... too pricey for me now.

Problem with a heat sink under the hood is not the flow of air, but rather the temperature of the air flowing over it. That's what I meant about being right over the engine. Think about how hot anything in the engine bay gets after the truck has been driven a good ways.

The P7's aren't really an option IMO but are just crazy insane bright for a single LED bulb. I have a great idea for a lens but we'll see how things go.

And I was mistaken, the R2's with the reflectors are closer to $7 each depending on how many you get. So it would be about $100 + drivers and my time essentially.

Georgia requires you get a permit even if you are on the FD? That blows.

I don't know why it would be difficult. The roof rack bolts to the roof and as such has a hole for the bolt. Modify the base of the roof rack to let the wire run under it and through a new hole (covered by the roof rack base). I'd suggest sealing it with a grommet and some silicone but that's about as easy as it gets.

that would def be illegal so would just have to watch and be able to turn that thing off super quick. cops would get you in a heart beat for blue lights.

or atleast i know if SC if you have any blue or red lights they will get you the second they see it. and normally not give you a break for it either
