2011 Taco Wiper Problems

So we here in the northeast are getting hit with an October snowstorm and my old windshield wiper issues are resurfacing.

When the windshield is covered with a small amount of snow, one or both wipers does not work and after you clear the snow they will operate but not with full force but all sloppy. I was told by the dealership that this is some kind of safety mechanism so that the wipers or motor dont break when they are frozen or weighed down with snow. You can remove the plastic covers at the base of the wiper arms and tighten down the nuts and the problem will be corrected but this does not stop it from happening again, Its very annoying when it happens in a snowstorm when the wipers are needed most.

Has anyone else had this experience or know a solution to this problem?

No problems here but we don't get snow either.....I'd be raising cain with the dealer, sounds like BS to me.

 

Haven't had a problem with them. Mine were frozen to the windshield so I turned on the defroster & squirted the windshield with the washer & they cleared snow & ice off the windshield.

Yea they have told you the right information.
It is a safety deal. Saves a bunch of wiper problems. The reason was because of all people to lazy to clean off there windshields properly before starting.

Here is the solution.
The arm mount is made out of soft aluminum. Once you spin the arm you need to remove the arm.
Clear the windshield completely.
Get a small pic or scribe.
The wiper pivot has vertical teeth and grooves. Like 30 of them. You need to remove the aluminum that is stuck between the teeth. ALL THE WAY AROUND. Make sure you clean the inside of the wiper arm for loose stuff too.

Reinstall in the proper park position and tighten down firmly. You will feel the teeth bite into the arm.

After you do this like 3 or 4 times you will need a new wiper arm because your reaming the pivot hole.

So, keep your windshield clean before you start up and before heavy snow builds up and you will never have to do this.

At one point in time it got spun and just tightening down will do nothing.

Hope this helps you. We're getting hammered over here and i'm sure i'll see 4 or 5 of these in the shop tomorrow.

 

Hey Mike thanks for the info. I will do as you said. The thing is that there was only about a quarter inch of slush on the windshield and it wasnt frozen at all. It seems that the wipers should be able to clear that small amount without a problem. Seems like a design flaw to me.

 

No not a design flaw really. I know what you mean and it should have handled that.
Like i said it might have been spun before for what ever reason and or not tightened enough from the factory. A little slush as long as it's not frozen should not of caused that.
just do what i suggested and i think you'll be good to go. Any more problems just get in touch............

You can make it easier to remove snow and slush with a fat coating of rain-x to your windshield and using premium wipe blades and rain x winter formula for your washer fluid
