AZ, if you find a place let me know. I am looking for that kind of range as well. What long rifles are you shooting?

Currently down in AZ I have my Rem 700 SPS Tac .308 with a few mods. Being its a 20" barrel I begin losing accuracy past 650 yards but I still enjoy trying. Up in WA I have a SA M1A set up as a M25 Marine DMR and that thing will drive tacs all day long.

I am debating what I want for a 1000+ yard shooter currently.

Hell if you're willing to haul targets out for me, I'll let you have your choice of firearms to shoot... minus the belt feds, those fuckers cost too much and too long to link.

I have 2 setups that I use for hunting/sporting, both are 300WM. I have a Rem 700 with a 26" tube and a VAIS MB. Topped off with a Zeiss 4-16x44 scope. It's housed in a HS Precision stock (which makes a huge difference). My other rifle is a Winchester 70 Classic with a 24" tube with a VAIS MB. Topped off with a Swarovski 6-18X50 scope. Housed in a HS Precision stock (I think that's what it is). I chose a 300WM because I can match up rounds from 110 grains for shooting whitetail deer all the way up to 250 grain for shooting Bullwinkle in AK (some point in my life).

With both rifles I've been able to consistently hit a 16"x16" gong out to about 725 yards. My reason for the 16" gong is that it's about the strike size of any deer or elk or goat. It just happens to be the strike size of the average man as well ;). You'd understand if you saw where I hunt.

My other "not so much of a hunting" rifle is a EDM 408 Chey-Tac. Hell of a long range rifle, just hard to find places to be able to utilize it to the fullest potential.

I love the EDM but it's so damn expensive to shoot, prices for a single round are damn near the same as a 50 ($9 a shot). I think a 300WM would be fairly economical to shoot. Maybe even a 338 (might want to start reloading) wouldn't be too bad. The one rifle I've been eye balling is that 338 long range hunter from Savage. While I was out in WY, I watched a shooter smack a 12" popper plate repeatedly with one of those rifles, right out of the box. I think that rifle is also the same as the law enforcement 110BA without the fancy stock.

There are a couple of ranges around the valley that can do 1000+ yards. One of them is Ben Avery's. If you haven't been up north to that range, do yourself a favor and spend a day out there.. Shooter's paradise out there. 50 lanes of small arms, 32 station sporting clays, 6 trap fields, 6 skeet fields, huge archery range with 3D targets. They also have a 1000 yard range but its only open once a month and you have to be a member of some kind of shooting club.

The other place is out near tucson, called Three Points. There is also a place out towards Yuma, but the name of the range slips me.

If you're looking for 500 and 650 yard gongs, the buckeye gun range and phx rod and gun club have them available.

I wish I could shoot long distance accurately, most I've done with my 30.06 is 250

Just takes practice.. There are a lot of factors that have to be considered when shooting long range. The most important is having a rifle that will shoot accurately. Then it's all about you. It's how you hold the rifle, how you breathe, what position you are shooting from.

I'm not the best long range shooter either, I'm certainly not drilling golf balls at 700. One of the best suggestions someone gave me was to go get yourself a decent bolt action 22 (cheap to shoot), slap a 3x9 scope on it and then go to the range and get consistent with hitting what you aim at from 50 to 100 yards.

When you get to the point where you can drill out a dime size hole at 100 yards, then go down to walgreens and pick up some cheap aspirins and some elmer's glue. Go home and take a 8.5x11" piece of paper and glue the aspirin in a grid pattern (about 5 across and about 8 down). Now take that and put it out at 110 yards and hit the aspirin.

This helped me with trigger control and my breathing. Some people will tell you to hold your breath on the inhale, some will tell you on the exhale, some will tell you somewhere in the middle. You have to do what feels natural to you.

Optics are a must.. When I hunt, I'd rather forget my rifle in the truck than my binos.. If you can see it, you can't hit it.

I hated dropping anywhere from 1000-1500 on a scope or 2500 on my binos but it's a scope/bino that will last me a lifetime (it also has a lifetime warranty). To make myself feel better, I just figure it like my mortgage on my house. paying it off 200 bucks at a time.. over 10 years.. LOL..

AZ has it right on the money for long range shooting. I am super out of practice and am going back to a .22LR to get proficient again. Completly discouting the ballistics, windage, and all the external effects of long range shooting start with learning your body. Rifle placement, breating, trigger control, eye relief, etc. Stuff you can control. The rifle will easily do the job, the shooter is another thing.

Yea, I used to practice with my M1a on iron sites with a 12" circle at up to 350 yds and my other rifles scoped out to 700. Mt current rifle unfortunatly looses accuracy after about 6-700 yards do to the 20" barrel but its also my hunting gun and I chose to go with the 20" because its easier moving around in the brush, a bit lighter and will drive tacks all day long at any hunting/urban enviroment setting.

I have seen that savage and its a beast. I have been looking at the 338 Lapua round but its not cost effective for me since I dont reload right now. I will most likely go to a 300 win mag myself. Its a completly capable round and a good trade off.

    Here is my rem 700:
    CustomRemington700-6_920ace0f5c80223173fb0d1b9ddf9b39fb3c07c7.jpg

Nikon tactical 4-16x50 scope with mil-dot reticle. Timney trigger, oversided bolt handle, and a few other goodies. Its a fun rifle.

Beautiful rifle! I love the stock, I've been toying with the idea of getting a stock with an adjustable cheek rest. With my Remmy 700 I have a HS Precision thumb hole stock (Don't laugh too hard). That thumb hole stock is great for when I'm shooting while sitting on my butt off my knees or off a tripod, but when I go prone I tend to find myself messing with my cheek weld.

Oh, and is that the Badger Ordnance magazine conversion you have on that rifle? That Sig (226?) is great pistol too!

Yea, it is. I love having the drop out mag. Originally it had that crap swing away plate I couldnt stand. I just hand loaded each round before. Good for on the bench but sucked in the field for sending multiple rounds downrange quickly.

My best so far with this rifle is 5 round @ .44" using Hornaday 168gr BTHP match ammo.

The sig was my friends. Its a good gun but I prefer my S&W M&P .40c

I hear ya about the magazine. I have a drop mag on my 700. I've only had to use it once while on a hunt. Fired off like 5 rounds at a buck while it was haulin' ass up a mountain. I had a serious case of buck fever and got all twitchy... LOL

Yea, I can see how that can get a little noisy. I have been stock piling rounds and have about 500 rounds of .308 now so when I get back to reality its time to head to the range and start working on fundamentals again. I cant wait to get the little .22lr I am getting from someone that already set up with optics and bi-pod so I can start shooting it. $10 for 500 rounds vice $30 for 20 rounds.

Do you reload? If I could find someone that does good quality match grade reloads I would gladly pay for the cost of materials and help out or something.

I don't do much reloading anymore. I have a couple of buddies of mine that will on occasion load up some rounds for me if i beg them. I know one of the daughters and nephews of the owner of Barnes Bullets so I sometimes also get a "special" package from them. But mainly I shoot factory loads.

I've been REALLY blessed by the gun gods, both of my 300WM rifles will consistently shoot 1-1.5" groups at 200 using the plain jane Remington 150 and 180grn corelok bullets (the cheapo green boxes).

About the only time I choose to shoot the Barnes bullets is if I go into Cali to hunt or if I'm going after elk or mule deer where I want the damage/trauma that the Barnes bullets cause. I've watched guys roll 800 pound elk at 500+ yards with that Barnes and I don't think any of them moved more than 10 feet from the initial point of impact.

If you are still local, check out a place called Thunderbird Cartridges. They used to do my loads for my 408 (before they were widely available). They were a little pricey but it was probably because it was a 408.
