LEOs does your service pistol have a mag disconnect safety?

As the title states does your duty pistol have a mag disconnect safety and why?

 

Good thread start. Just a little back ground, this stems from a previous post we are debating the pro's and cons of this in here:

Not on my H&K USP, or Kimbers, or Rugers, or my Sigs (220, 226) or even my little KelTec. BUT, I haven't modded any of them. I have little Walther P22 that does have one, it's not a big deal to me.

 

I'd never carry one with a disconnect for duty or CCW. I rather have a single shot pistol than a 2 pound brick. If you are worried about pistol retention then you need to invest in a good quality holster and good self defense training. My .02 anyway.

 

For those of us not fluent in gun, whats a mag disconnect?

 

Long story short, when you drop the mag it prevents the gun from firing. its a california requirement.

My argument is that its a pointless safety measure. Proper and safe weapons handling will prevent any kind of supposed negligent discharge this safety is supposed to prevent. Also as Apricot said and I have said since the begining, anyone in or who has been in a tacitcal enviroment wants that last round if possible. How many times have you slapped a magazine home just to have it pop back out due to stress or something crazy like that. This "satefy" basically turns the gun into a paperweight without a magazine in it. I dont like it and will never buy a gun with it.

 

so its like a "Just in case one is left in the chamber" sorta safety?

The weapon will not fire if the mag has been dropped (removed from the firearm), by accident, or intensionally. Leaving it useless until the magazine is replaced.

meh i could see the advantages being a LEO having this feature especially if you get into a scuffle with someone for YOUR gun, hit the mag release and draw your back up weapon

that being said i CCW a glock, and my holster has no retention system, i'm not gonna try to conceal a level 3 holster everyday, if i was LEO, yeah probably would because i dont have to hide it

 

The problem is that in the heat of battle who is to say that you dont hit the mag release by accident. it has been done before and it will be done again. At least you get one "BANG" out of the gun without a a mag safety instead of just standing there like an idiot in complete shock. That one bang might be all you need to stop the threat or buy you enough time to recover and reload.

 

Apart from a rather heavy trigger pull, the only safety that my firearm has is the mag disconnect safety. I believe that it makes sense in the LE profession just in case there is a struggle over the firearm and you're only able to retain your mag. LEO's carry additional mag's, something that the bad guys wouldn't have and it is also more likely that I would have an additional mag as opposed to loose ammunition. If I lose my handgun and make in inoperable, I can comfortably return to my vehicle and grab my shotgun or rifle without having to worry about being shot in the back...

There are pros and cons, I didn't make the decision to have the mag disconnect but I'm also not upset that I have it.

 

I haven't heard of the "drop the mag" being taught at the academy or FLETC training level since the 90's (from talking to old timers). I have taken many classes for pistol retention in conjunction with Sim rounds. What was discovered is 1 out of 10 times folks were actually able to drop the mag upon first contact with a subject trying to grab the weapon. Unless you practice the hell out of that, I don't think it will work in real life. It sounds great in theory, not so well in execution. Most professional pistol trainers would not recommend mag disconnects that I have run into (Ken Hackathorn, Larry Vickers to name a few.).

 

Our Emergency Response Teams and Police Dog Section do not have the mag disconnect, so I guess that should tell you something. I'm not the type to care whether I have it or not. That being said, I was simply responding to the OP and feel no need to defend the decision made by the RCMP.

 

Oh no, you misunderstand, not attacking your position at all. Just stating what I have observed. Probably shouldn't have quoted you directly.

 

No need to defend anything. We arent saying one is right or wrong, this just stemmed from peoples opinions on the pro's and cons of this on another thread. The problem was that on that thread there was only one LEO who chimed in so we started this thread to ask more people if they had it and what they thought of it. I like good debate like this from military and police as most of us have been through many differant types of training and real world situations unlike 99% of the population that has never and will never be in any type of situation that warrents the use of a fire arm.

 

I carry a Sig Sauer P229 on duty and it doesn't have a mag disconnect safety. I don't even like the idea of it to begin with. Crazy stuff can always happen in the heat of the moment and having a safety on your weapon isn't a good idea. Sig Sauer doesn't have trigger safeties either.

 

I totally agree with you on this one DD. See to many times people will accidentally drop their mag, forget to take a safety off, etc. I am not a big fan of the militaries choice of pistol M9 Beretta although I will say the thing is rugged and holds up to a LOT os use and abuse.

Like your SIG my M&P dosent have any safeties except the hinged trigger safety so once your finger is on the trigger the safety is off.
