Toyota Man's 11 DCSB Build

Well I am starting again. I sold the Indigo ink pearl 08 DCSB a while back since I was given a company vehicle. Sold that truck.


Well, August 8th 2011 decided to roll its ugly head and I lost both my parents in a motor vehicle accident, while they were on vacation. I had talked about buying another truck again with my dad as I missed my other tacoma. He said he wanted to help me find a truck and build it up like my other toyota's in the past and we would start looking when they got back from vacation. I really wanted to build another pickup like I had when I was a teenager with him. I did some research and this trucks production date was August 8th 2011. This truck holds a very emotional attachment to me. I truely feel my parents are with me everytime I drive it.

I decided that I was going to do it right this time. I really wanted the Barcelona Red color in a double cab short box. I looked at 6 dealers that were within about 2 hours of home. The only dealer that had the exact truck I was looking for was not negotiable on price. They wanted MSRP, they said this body style is very popular and they wouldn't budge. So I moved on to the next dealer. They didn't have the color I wanted, but would negotiate on price. I keep them in the back of my mind and pondered if color really made a difference. Last dealer ship I called ended up about 2 to 3 weeks time total since I started looking, had the truck I wanted in the color I wanted still on the transporter truck. They hadn't unloaded it yet. I loaded up the wifey and kids and we headed down to take a look see. When we arrived they were still unloading trucks. Mine was on the top rack towards the front.

Once they got it off, I looked at it. Kinda cool with all the white plastic stuff on the paint to protect it. Seats had the plastic on them too.

I had already talked with the guys with the Costco buying program. Price was set. I got it for roughly $4000 less than window sticker. I was happy. No haggleing or negotiating required.

Once we made it inside to sign papers on the truck, I said I had a few goodies that I wanted installed on the truck before I took it home.

I also had the clear bra installed at the same time. Can't really take a picture of that as you cant really see it.

I was pondering between the sport and off road for a while. I really liked the look of the sport, but wanted the function and features of the off road.

The truck I ended up buying was the off road. To fix the problem of looks, I ordered the painted door handles, mirrors, and hood scoop from the dealer. I had them paint the hood and will get it installed this next Tuesday. I also found Jim Sickles from Downey Off Road was selling left over inventory on Ebay. I ordered the Downey Suspension from him. So I have the Downey modified Billy 5100 with (ebiach) spelling, with add a leaf for the rear.

I have ordered the the rear 5100 and LR UCA's as well. These should be here on Tuesday. I am ordering 16x8 Raceline Raptor wheels in chrome on Monday and 285 75 16 BFG tires as soon as I have time to drop the truck off and have the lift kit installed. I am also going to pickup a GemTop fiberglass tonneau cover on Tuesday as well. It is then getting dropped off to be color matched to the truck as well.

Sorry to be so long winded but this is what build ups are about. Your thoughts, questions and constructive criticisms are welcome.

I have the wheeling 4runner and don't know if I want this to be a trail capable or just a nice driving street truck, that can trailer the 4runner to the trails. Got some thinking/searching to do...?

 

Looking forward to seeing this come along. Sorry to read about yor parents - there cant be a worse feeling than losing both at once.

Question: hella 500's regular or black magics?

I have only ran the regular Hellas in the past, I don't know too much about the black magic ones. Gonna have to do some research. Any input about them?

 

Well I've only had the black magics! So I can't compare either. Let me see if I can find a review with comparison somewhere. Im mounting mine behind a Satoshi style grill as well so I thought the black would "hide" better when off.

Looks like the Classic, Black Magic, and FF differ only in appearance. Output seems pretty close between all 3

 

I hadn't thought about that. I think I like your thoughts about being harder to see when not turned on. Good find on the tube.

Here the only pics I have it right now, these are rather old. It is in the shop getting the wiring and exhaust system completed right now. I didn't have time to finish putting it together, I was getting close then their accident happened and I don't have time to get it done. I really would rather do my own work and got close to completing my self, but you got to do what you got to do.

Funny story about why I swapped engines. I had been looking at this swap for a while, even was following others on another forum that were doing this same swap. I thought to myself, some day I would like to do this swap when this 3.0 motor goes. I figured it would be a while as I had just done a timing belt swap, compression check ect. This 3.0 was a tight engine and ran great for a 3.0 motor. I had just finished installing the lift kit on it and took it out on its first run.

I took my son and my dad with me and we went out for the day in the Oregon Coast Range. There was a little snow and some good muddy trails. I ran it pretty hard and it worked flawlessly. Drove it back home and parked the truck that night. I went out about 2 days later as my daughter wanted to ride in it to go to gymnastics class. Dropped her off no issues. Went back about 1 hour later and after I picked her up and started it, it ran ruff for about 30 seconds then was fine. I made it about 4 blocks and it belched a huge cloud of white smoke. I was pissed, rolled my window down and it had the sweet smell to it. I got it off the road and had to have the tow truck come and get me. Sad day, head hung low and shameful realization that my ride had ended.

I called my dad and said guess what, I fried my motor. Won't turn over it's locked up tight. He said time for a V8. So this is where I find my self. I am very excited to get this thing running and wheeling soon. I would expect it to be done in the next month or so. I had planned on taking my dad out for its first trip again, alas it will only be me and my boy. I look forward to continuing the family tradition. I hope he enjoys working on trucks with me as much as I did working on them with my old man....

I am thinking after I break parts on the IFS front swapping out to straight axle. I think I am going to try coilovers or springs and linked. Just trying to be different than everybody else that does these swaps.

I figure with this being my dedicated trail rig now, I will make the tacoma my show truck/ street truck for the most part. Chrome and such.

Alright, I picked up the freshly painted new hood with the scoop on it. It looks awsome. I also got the painted door handles and painted mirrors. I dropped off the tonneau cover and should get it next week. I will Yale pics tomorrow.

 

I also got the rear billy 5100 shocks along with the LR UCA via UPS tonight when I got home.

 

Sorry, no pictures yet. I have forgot the camera the last few days. I will get them posted as soon as I can.

I did schedule with the installer to put the Downey Coil over kit, rear add a leaf, Light Racing UCA's. I have also ordered tires. They should be here next week.

I ordered the Pro Comp Extreme Mud Terrain tires. 285x75x16. I have also ordered wheels. I went with Raceline Raptor in a 16x8 in Chrome.

I should be picking up my painted tonneau cover as well.

Toyota shipped me 3 door handles and 4 caps. I have to wait for the other handle to arrive. I did have to remove the front door panel to unplug the mirrors. That is the easiest door panel I have ever removed. 2 bolts, 1 plastic pop insert and it just pulls off the door. The rear door handles should be easy.

That is a sweet runner! That 1UZ looks pretty sexy tucked in that engine bay. Thanks for sharing the story.

I'm hoping to buy a 4runner for a trail rig sometime next year.

 

4runners are great trail rigs albeit a tad heavier than the trucks, all the stuff stays dry in the back. I can fit the kids, wife, dog and all the recovery gear. I love this 4runner and am so happy to have it as the wheeler rig.

I am thinking about what the next step will be with mods to it and now the tacoma. I want the new truck to be a mall crawler for a while. No sense beating on a new ride when I have this as a trail toy. I will say this engine swap is a pain in the ass. If I had to do it over again, I would do the 3.4 engine with a super charger if I wanted more power. I only did this because not to many people have V8 powered toyota's powered by an engine designed by toyota.

I am hoping to trailer the 4runner to the Rubicon with the Tacoma, once all the mod's are finished.

Sorry to hear about your parents. I have also lost mine not too long ago. When I bought my Tacoma I could almost hear my dad saying "about time you got a truck" haha. That thing looks good man and the 4runner looks like a beast.

I picked up an old 4runner as my putt putt while I was building this one. Last conversation I had with my dad was him teasing me about getting rid of the (shit box) I was driving. I said yeah I can't wait to have a nice rig again.

Never thought it would be this soon. The old man and mom took good care of me. I was able to build this truck. It will look very similar to one of my favorite toys I have ever owned. It was my second truck and my dad helped me build it. I will post some pictures of it later. Mom and dad also left me the go fast car they both loved driving.

I am looking at about 6 months and the runner should.be on the trail. I will post video as soon as I have some.

 

Here are some pics of the second toyota truck I owned. My dad helped me buy this shortly after my 17th Birthday back in 1997. I lost this truck on January 4, 2004 on my way to interview for a law enforcement job, needless to say, I missed the interview time . I hit ice under the snow and spun out on the highway. I was only going about 40 mph when it happened and I tried to correct out of the spin but the ditch ended up doing the stopping. We built it together. I loved this Toyota and hope that I have as much fun with this new one as I did that one. I bought this truck completly stock. We fitted it with a Super lift 5.5 lift kit. 4:88 gears, upgraded the interior to SR5 seats and stuff. 3.0 5 spd. 33" mud tires and also had 35 SSR swampers at the time, custom 2 1/2" exhaust from engine back, chrome light bar, warn winch ect. I had removed some of the parts at the time as I was updating stuff when the accident happened.

I bought the rig back but ended up parting it out as the driver side was munched bad all the way down and the cab was crushed in the middle.

The pic's below show my father in law that was their to help clean up afterwards. The only injury was a small laceration on my left arm from shattered glass. Other than that, not even a bruise
