manual tranny flush / fluid change

Was just told at the dealership that the case has to be cracked open, so its basically a dealer only type of deal. I got under the truck and saw a drain plug.

Can anyone out there verify for me how to change the fluid in a 6 spd 2nd gen? Thanks.

 

Get the truck warm, drain the tranny and refill... Make sure you've located the correct drain plug and refill hole (not trying to talk down to you, but it's been done plenty of times in the past where people have drained the wrong oil and refilled the into the wrong fill port).

Only the Autos need the flush since they have torque converters.

 

Never heard of flushing a manual before....

I just drain and refill. Here's the basics. Loosen the fill plug first. It should be on the side of the transmission. Then take out the drain plug and drain the fluid into a pan or whatever you like to use. Once it's done put the drain plug back in. Remove the fill plug the rest of the way and fill it up until fluid comes out the fill hole. Then put the fill plug back in.

Other things to consider:
1. You might need a fluid pump to get the fluid into the tranny. These can be found for a few bucks at an auto parts store.
2. Like in the post above, make sure you're taking out the correct plugs
3. Some people like to replace the crush washers on the plugs at the same time (I'm not sure if there are any on the tranny plugs)
4. Torque plugs to spec when putting them back in

 

I notice though that you have a 5 lug truck, so do we have the same motor and tranny? And the plug I saw was in a small case between the actual bell housing and the shaft going to the rear wheels. I'm assuming thats the tranny, but could also be something else I suppose.

I just want for someone with a v6 2g with a 6 spd to verify that there is a drain plug. Picture would be awesome also so I know exactly what I'm looking at.

 

Is this what you were looking at? If so, that's the transfer case, not the transmission. The transfer case would have the rear drive shaft out the back and a shaft out the front going to the front differential. The transmission would feed into the transfer case. I'm trying to find you a pic of the 6spd transmission.

That's a new one.

 

I just did my tranny yesterday. Right behind bellhousing at back of engine, thats your tranny. Drain bolt( 24mm socket required) right on the bottom. Fill bolt, also 24mm on drivers side of tranny. Be sure you loosen the fill plug first, like others have said, then drain your tranny. A pump for new tranny fluid really helps, I think it would be next to impossible to get new fluid in there without making a big mess if you dont have a pump.

 

On another note. I went with the red-line MT-90 tranny fluid. Good product!

 

Not called Stealership for nothing. What a bunch of bull shite.

 

This should make it obvious ...

1GR-FE, 6 Speed MT and Transfer case. The drain plug is underneath in line with the other 2. If you have a hand pump, you can fill from the side where you check the oil level.
