Mil Spec or not?

    For the life of me I fail to understand how military specifications that are established at a level that can be met by the lowest bidder are looked upon as of the highest quality.

    The only example of this result that I can think of is with the AR rifle.

    Does not compute.

    this is not always the case. Colt was not the lowest bidder, but if you got to see what we actualy pay for m4's, m16's, and m9's you would shit your pants...(cheap compared to the civi versions) Mil spec means the minimum requirments to pass military specifications. They had to set a standard for the company to follow to ensure every one is exactly the same (uniform).

    x2 any civilian company producing something for the government under contract is doing it to make money and they are gonna charge as much as they can. any one else think we should be buying more american weapons? i know colt does our rifles, but why do use Beretta?

    The Beretta M9 is manufactured in the US from US made parts. That was part of the contract requirements.
