Need to haul a TON of lumber!!

I need to haul multiple >8"x8"x12'. Any suggestions? I was thinking multiple trips unless some one has some kind of rig that I can build in the bed of my truck to help support the weight (because I dont want to buy a lumber rack or rest it on the tailgate).. any tips, tricks, or suggestions would be appreciated..

Rent a trailer

 

In a 6' bed the lumber will be sticking out another 6'. Too much weight to be cantilevered out. Use a trailer. Even a full-size truck with a 7' long bed may have trouble.

$19 will get you a flatbed truck from Lowe's (under a certain mileage/time frame).

Renting a truck is still a good idea.

 

Just from looking at that pic of the nissan and the home made rack, that doesnt look like it would be good, their would be to much wait on your tailgate, if the bottom lumber ran from the front to the back then ok so it can cantilever out , but it starts from the center to the tail gate their for half of the load will still be on your gate, do like other said just rent a trailer or better yet just buy one, they come in HANDY!

 

is there a hitch on truck? you can make an insert that extends out of the hitch, past the down tailgate about 1-2' . then come up to the level of tailgate and put a crosspiece on to support longer material. for a large amount of material I'd check on the cost for them to deliver. I've used the T support on my truck to haul small amounts of long material, and never had a problem.

OP , seriously , get it delivered or rent a trailer .

I don't know what species of timbers you are hauling , but if they are wet , a 12' 8"x8" will weigh over 100 lbs each , too much weight on the tailgate at the fulcrum point .

If you have to make 4 or 5 trips , you could have it delivered for the price of the gas .

Trailer ... I haul a trailer frequently for work with no less then a 1/2 ton of tools / gear. Many times I'll have 3000# or so of materials with no issues.

As mentioned, the cost benefit of a paying for delivery or renting a
larger truck is worth considering. It can save unnecessary abuse to your truck.

 

Id like to use western red cedar.. weighing in at about 23lb per ft3 at 20% moisture content, an 8x8x144 would weigh 121.9 lb.... I need 12 I guess I'll rent a trailer, which means boss mans gonna have to buy me a hitch and reciever.. Darn... Im building a giant pergola for a restaurant/bar patio, by the way.. Thanks guys!
