Been looking around but still can't really find the answer I want. I have finally gotten sick of the ride that my spacer lift created. I want a softer ride. So here is my question:

Would 5100's with stock springs, set at 2.5, be better than 5100's with 885's on them set at like .85 and with the top plate piece? I need to keep the 3" lift.

Let me know fellas. Obviously, price is still a consideration too.

    You said you want a 3" lift , but 5100's @ 2.5 is a 2 1/2" lift

Search in the "suspension" section. This is prob the most common question covered. In short, yes upgrading the springs is the only way to go. Get the eibachs though, they match the 5100's valving better. Setting the 5100's at max will be the same as running a spacer lift.

2.5 is close enough and if it wasn't then i could add the little top spacer that apparently doesn't affect ride quality.

Which eibachs are they? I couldn't find them even on eibach's own site...

    I got 2 1/2" from the 885's on my DCLB 4x4 , no spacer , no .85 preload

Check Toytec's website! They will give you a member discount too! I've heard the OME coils are fine as lots of people run them!

I was the one who tested the 5100's with the 885 coils since no one said it was possible. At .85 with them the rid is pretty hard since the coils are already longer then stock and also much stiffer. You pretty much kill your travel, I would stick with the stock springs set at 2.5 with a small spacer. You might want to add new UCA's, but if your going to plan on spending money on the suspension i'd look into finding a good set of used aftermarket coilovers. I have some DR(Icon) coilovers with a 1cm spacer so i don't have to crank the shit out of the shocks to get the height i want not to mention the more to crank the stiffer it gets.

I'm right at 3" with 5100s and 885s...I have a prerunner though. I was sitting a little over 3" but the suspension settled thankfully

OME 885's will ride better than preloading the crap out of your stock coils. If you go with OME coils, leave the 5100's at 0, no need to preload a lift coil.

The Eibach coils that were suggested are nice and will give you right about 2.5" of lift when paired with 5100's at .85. Toytec sells a kit to give you a true 3" lift with the Eibach coils/5100's and a thicker top plate. Eibach coils have a much higher spring rate than the OME's so they'll ride stiffer.

I've got the same truck too...thats weird though, sure you didn't get 886's by accident?

Any ideas on how to get the softest ride without going into thousands of dollars worth of coilovers and stuff? Even used ones I think would be more than 5100's and what not...

If you want softest ride, go back to stock. If you want to keep the lift Eibach's/5100's or OME/5100's are probably your best bet.

OZ does not have 886's. You'd know it if you accidentally got 886 coils. They are taller and stiffer than the 885's and designed specifically to give close to 3" of lift with 200+ lbs hanging over the front end. If you had 886's and a stock bumper, you'd be well over 3" of lift, have almost no downtravel and it'd ride like a dump truck.

Money being no object, I'd rather do Icons because of the shocks themselves. You can mess with the valving and make it ride the way you want where as with the 5100's what you see is what you get, not rebuilding, non adjustable (when it comes to valving). I didn't want to deal with rebuilds and for what I do the 5100's and Eibachs made sense for me although I think I'd go with OME if I were to do it all over again.

I would have to research a little bit though on ride quality before I jumped into Icon. I've always heard they are incredible but I never considered them or researched them because they were out of my league cost-wise. PM Chris 4x2, he had a set that was custom valved by DSM and had nothing but great things to say about them.

In my opinion, OME, Eibach and Bilstein 5100's are in their own category and can't really be compared to Icon, Fox and King. Icon can easily be double the cost of the 5100/OME lift. If they're valved properly, they'll provide a great ride but you have to decide whether that adjustability and high level of performance is worth the cost. If you really need it, it's definitely worth it.

What about pro comps? I saw a coilover on their website that I guess fits our trucks. Part number 57097bmx?
Any ideas? Are they expensive? Can coilovers be bought for like $500?
If not I guess it's 5100's and springs.

I just want it to stop jolting the whole truck when I hit a little bump or something...

Careful with Procomp. I'm not sure about all of their coils but the coil in one of their Tacoma kits is a 700#/in coil (very very very stiff). To put that in perspective, I think the stock coil is 540#/in and even the stiffer Eibachs are only 620#/in. Aftermarket coilovers can be bought for $500. 5100's are under $200 for the fronts and coils are $160 ish for OME and Eibachs. FYI, the term 'coilover' refers to a suspension type. You have coilovers already.

"ride like air over a bump."

Ain't gonna happen. Go back to stock.

When folks say eibachs ride better than 5100s at 2.5, they mean over rough roads that are bottoming out the factory travel, unless you have TRD offroad, with progressive rate springs. I'm that case eibachs might be better.

The other possibility might be to try 882 springs that are softer and designed for lighter first gen trucks, but there, you are definitely blazing new ground and experimenting where no one has gone before.

Where can they be bought for less than $500?
Also, I do offroad, will 5100's and coils or at 2.5 be any better because of the larger diameter and what not? I'm not asking for long travel here, but currently if I hit an inch deep pothole I feel like I just went off a jump...
