In the past 5 months iv killed 2 pairs of patagonia drifter shoes FYI their shoes suck at life i assumed the first pair were a fluke when the sole fell off. When the second pair fell apart i returned them, sadly my local EMS has a piss poor selection of shoes so i decided to order these online and pray they fit/are made any better than patagonia's shoes.

 

im fixing to order the Eureka Apex 3xt along with 2 Coleman White Water sleeping bags off Amazon for $199! Pretty good deal . . . . . . . untill i realize i need that shit this friday and to guarantee that it gets here thursday, i gotta pay $54 for shipping as opposed to $16 for 3-5 days or free for 5-8 days!

The price u pay for not planning ahead! oh well

I used the foot print that came with it. A couple years ago in NH we got dumped on for about 10 hours until we packed up. The tent it self was water proof. The only water than came in was because I didn't center the rain fly right so when my feet touched the end of the tent it went out past the rain fly, but have learned since then.

 

found a few interesting things on this site about winter backpacking... Here are a few things I found interesting/ didnt think about:

Putting a bottle of warm water in your boots will help keep them from freezing overnight. It helps if the boots are then put in a stuff sack instead of being left out in the open. <<<< I HATE putting on those frozen boots the next morning after getting out of the nice warm mummy bag.

To prevent your feet from getting cold when you put on cold boots in the morning, remove the insoles and warm them up in your sleeping bag or inside your coat before putting your boots on.

Tie loops of cord to all of the zipper pulls on your pack and jacket so that you can operate them with gloves or mittens or cold fingers. <<<< did this. works like a charm!

I have done the zipper pull trick and i agree it works great

 

even without cloves, those tough backpack zippers can be a pain!

 

True that....I just got back from camping in the smokies. Pretty damn cold the whole weekend! It rained non-stop the first two days I was there and it must've been in the 20s several nights. I know those days it never got out of the 30s for a high. Did a lot of fly fishing and a little bit of hiking. Not as much as I wanted to, but was still fun to chill around a campfire. Next time I gotta remember some reading material though!

 

Good stuff! Never thought about just removing the foot beds iv always thrown my boots in a bag and put them between my sleeping bag and bivy. With all the snow thats hit new england should be a good year for my snowshoes

 

I just ordered some of these for next time I'm backpacking, camping, etc in the winter. Also should be useful around the house; hardwood floors get crucial cold in the winter!
