I'm currently on my 3rd ring and pinion set..luckily for me, all have broken on the street and not on the trail. My last set broke while backing out if the my driveway..that time the pinion gear broke. Between working on my Crawler and the taco I have learned all of the shortcuts and can easily swap a 3rd out in less then an hours time

I still have the stock ring and pinion in mine and hasnt let me down. 88,000 abused miles and still running strong. Then again, i maintain it to the max and only use Mobil 1 Synthetic in the diffs and Transfer Case.

I don't disconnect the brake lines from the calipers, instead I undo all of the brake line hangers along the axle assembly. I pull out the axle shafts as far as the loose brake lines allow me to ..I'm using a lot of force while doing this causing the brake line to bend some out of shape. But it all goes back together just fine. Once the axle shafts are pulled from the housing far enough for the inner splines to clear the 3rd ,I'll shove a piece of wood in between the housing and shafts. Doing that will allow me to wiggle the 3rd out with no problems.

Abuse? I never abused my truck! It likes when I'm rough! :)

Only one of mine on the trail - the next two backing out of Mario's driveway - right after I knocked down his brick wall backing into his driveway! :) Second one flippin' a bitch to see Wyatt - my truck must have wanted a 60 that day! :)

Fucking Teflon man! Have I ever told you that I hate you? I do. I'll keep you warm at night, but I still hate you!!! :)

Same, same. I do the 'Right Stuff' - never had it weep on me but, what the hell, never had a third in longer than a year!

That is why you get a 4WD for off roading... so you can crawl up stuff like that and not abuse your Tacoma by needing momentum to get through...

I have a 4x4. I was in 4lo with rear locked. That hill was extremely steep with about a 2 foot rock ledge in the middle, hence why I got air. Oh trust me, I didnt just blast up it the first time. I attempted crawling it in first gear and my back tires would not get over the ledge. So I tried again, each time increasing my speed and getting closer each time. Then i said screw it and tried it in 2nd gear and almost made it so I wanted to do it one more time and i made it after getting more momentum, and air.

There was no way in hell anything was going to crawl up that hill.

That isnt possible without 4x4, sorry.

This is perhaps an example of the topic of this thread... where A-TRAC (front traction along with rear traction or rear locked) could have made all the difference...

You had to bonzai that spot because your front tires (one of them) would spin?

Well, hope you didn't break anything...

For fun, try backing up, slow and see if locked you get further... although once on an angle, the center of gravity would shift to the rear (front end if backing up) where the open differential could once again let you down.
