KM2 or Duratracs?

As I write this my '11 DCLB is having plate bumpers, a 3" front lift w/5100's, a small spacer, and OME 885 spring to compensate for the bumper and winch weight, and airbags in the rear for a bit of lift although I'll probably be getting a small block to level. Sliders and shell already on there. I've been running Michelin LTX AT's in 265/70r17 but with more aggressive bumpers and more lift I know I'm going to want 285's and something more aggressive. I will be doing some expedition type offroading when time allows and some medium difficulty Moab trails.

I love the look of KM2's and offroad they'd be great but I drive about 18k a year commuting. I also live in northern Utah where snow is a factor. The Duratracs still are pretty aggressive and should be better in the snow and perhaps better on the freeway. I'm battling what I want vs what probably meets my needs better. So....are the KM2's good enough for daily driving or should I stick with the Duratracs?

 

I loved my km2s but with 18k miles a year be ready to buy tires every christmas i got about 25k outta mine

 

Km2s are great daily driven tire I do 70-100 miles a day on mine and there quite and wearing great.. With that said the duratracs are just as good as a dd tire but will be much better in the snow... I choose the km2s cause there stronger an hold up better on rocks and I love my tall skinny 255-80-17's.

 

Just got my KM2's, I think they are great. Quiet on the highway and handle well. People say they are ok in the snow, but not so good on ice.

 

My KM2s are at the 30k mile mark. I was driving 60 miles a day to work. Off roading was limited though. I like the tires and are great if you don't mind the road noise. In ice they are not that great.

 

10,000 miles on the duratracs and they look brand new

 

2 totally different tires, for 2 totally different purposes.

 

what ply and rating are you running?

 

I would recommend the toyo open country mud terrains. they are smooth, quiet, great in snow, and you would get about 50,000-60,000 out of them if you take good care of them. three ply sidewall so no worries about flats. I have sold and put these on thousands of vehicles for over 7 years now and very rarely see one in for a flat repair. Great tire!

 

only if they werent so expensive i would have gotten the Toyos! I just ordered my km2s monday..

 

toyos are way too heavy. i like my km2s

 

Yeah, I was hoping to get 2 years out of them. I'm not a lead foot.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've thought about those too. One of the things that keeps shooting down the KM2's is the snow/ice issues. So you're saying the Open Country MT's are good in the snow or just not bad for a MT?

I keep going back to Duratracs but I'm worried about them holding up off road. Not that with a long bed DC I'm going to get that aggressive. Any other suggestions?

 

i live in Canada and while a mud terrain tire looks killer on your ride it's gonna be a pain in the ass on ice. if you have snow that hangs around for extended periods, go with the duratracs.

 

I'm on my 3rd set of KM2s. I got about 45,000 miles out of my last set.

 

Snow ?

 

I had them in snow a couple times and they performed fine. I had mine siped so when it starts snowing in the mountains here I'll be able to see if they perform any better, if there's any difference.

I just ordered duratracs for my dclb

 

They gripped the soft stuff pretty good, I've never really had them in hard packed snow or very icy conditions though.
