Rear brakes sticking?

I just got my '05 DC Sport a few weeks ago. A noticed that after I come to a stop when I release the brake pedal to go, I hear a thud from the back brakes. Like they are stuck and release when i go. I have plenty of shoe left. Is this normal for the drum brakes?

 

I got my 06 a couple months ago and it does the same thing. Between that and the tranny surge at a stop light I will go crazy.

 

You need a new drive shaft...mine did that and they replaced it. Problem gone.

In the interim try unbolting the carrier bearing and tighting it back to spec. I think sometimes if it gets tightened while in the air it acts different when sitting on the ground. Its free and might fix the problem.

 

My 05 does the same thing, but I am not too worried about it.

 

Lots of people have also suggested axle wrap, do you have the rear TSB done? My 05 does the same.

 

No I don't have the TSB done. What is axle wrap?

 

axle wrap : caused by torque of the rear wheels twisting the leaf springs into a sort of "S" shape. This is unwanted suspension movement that allows the pinion angle to change.The springs twist and untwist rapidly, causing the rear to hop under power. Spring-over axle leaf setups are more prone to axle wrap than spring-under configurations. Shock placement, such as one shock facing forward and one facing backwords, is done to reduce wrap. Axle wrap is also increased by lift blocks. Here is a simple diagram showing the leaf twisting under axle wrap.

Some people have said that this has gone away with the upgraded leaf pack. I am going to do an rear add-a-leaf this summer. That has also bee known to take care of the problem. Like some one said before you might want to double check the drive line.

 

i had thudding coming from my rear brakes, took it in and they said it was the brakes were loose. the head tech said that the tacomas all have this issue just on some its worse.... he said all they have to do was pack in some 'really heavy grease like stuff thats not grease' into the brake drum. ever since then i have had no issues with it

Mine does it too! I hate it and keep thinking the car behind me tapped my rear bumper. Im always looking like WTF? It does bother me a lot. Not much I can do about it now with 70k miles. If anyone actually knows any "facts" about it, please share. I had heard that the transmission was shifting into 1st as the truck would move forward (no punt intended Toyota). Now I read "drive shaft" and "axle wrap." Any TSB on this one? I do have a spacer in the front now and Toyota has already done the TSB in the rear for the leafs. Let us know. Curious minds want to know. Thanks.

Seriously...try loosening the carrier and re-torquing then let me know if that helps.

 

Any updates about this issue? I have been having this right now and waiting if I can get info from someone how to resolve it.

 

I've been having this problem for a few months now. When I come to a stop, there is a "bump," from the rear brakes, then when I release the brake pedal, there is a thud - it feels like the rear brakes don't release fully until a second or so after the front brakes.

'07 PreRunner Access Cab V6, TRD Off-Road, 92,000 miles, original brakes all the way around.

 

i know this thread is old but i'm having the same issue. anyone resolve this?

 

It's likely not actually the brakes. I resolved mine by greasing the slip yoke, there's lots of how to threads on it.

 

Have you put the rear end up on jack stands, put the truck in neutral and manually rotate the rear tires by hand? Make sure you chalk/block the front wheels to prevent movement since the parking brake is on the rear wheels. The opposite rear wheel should rotate counter to your rotation because of the magic of the rear diff. It is possible that your rear parking brake adjuster gave up the ghost. On the inner face of the rear drum will be a rubber plug that you can counter rotate the adjuster then pull off the rear drum to check the rig. You may have broken a spring in your rear drum causing the shoes to shift. Just a word for the wise, backing up while braking will help to keep your rear adjuster properly tight.

mine are dragging. both rear drums get much hotter than the front brakes. there is slight resistance in one spot on the driver's rear and no drag that i can tell on the passenger rear. What's unusual, is the passenger rear seems to get even hotter after driving for a while than the other side. feels like i'm towing a trailer when accelerating from a stop once they get hot. transmission gets hotter than normal too from all the drag. MPGs down as well.

 

oh well that sounds like a very different issue than the thud the OP for this old thread described. I'd start with looking at the shoes and making sure nothing is broken and everything is properly lubricated and moving freely. Check the adjustment of the shoes or maybe even e brake and go from there

 

i got the thud too. i've tried lubricating everything but didn't really help at all. will try inspecting it again this weekend.
