Using the 4x6 grooves in the bed

so i know that there are 2 grooves in my taco's bed for putting 4x6's in and making a raised bed. I've never tried this but a friend of mine is having a airplane engine delivered and neither of our trucks have enough width for the crate between the wheel wells. So i was thinking about trying this out.

Has anyone done this? without much weight? was it stable? is that composite bed able to handle heavier weight?

The crate all-in-all is only supposed to weight 350lbs...so its not that heavy. Anyone have pictures or stories?

Are you talking about the grooves on top of the wheel wells? Because if so, i have been wondering what they were for, LOL.

 

haha yea they are for "adding another bed" or having 2 levels

 

I thought they were intended for making a raised bed that you could carry sheet materials (8' x 4') - which won't go between the wheel wells. Your plan sounds good, but I have a couple of suggestions. Use 2 x 6s, and if need be shave them down a bit. That way the top of the wheel wells will be at the same height as the top surface of the timber - to help spread the load. Dunno why the cutouts weren't designed to be the right depth for '2 bys'.

Then have a couple of supports in the middle of the wood so they don't bow.

But really, 350lbs is nothing.

 

Thanks so much guys!! I have been sitting there wondering what those notches were forever!! I decided to use mine to make an ATV rampish device, so the front wheels sit off the ground and the quad is angled enough and more forward(but with a chock to keep the quad from going far enough forward to have the bumper break the window) so the gate can shut, plus i can put all my gear under there and not worry about it flying away.

But your idea would seem way more practical for most people than mine, hope to see some pics when you are done.

if you want room for your quad, all i did was bought a set of car ramps. ya the quad sit up high in the front but it works and i even have a cross the bed tool box in my taco]
