Midwest winter driving

Around 5 inches fell today my 45 minute commute only took an hour and 45 minutes. The two bags of sand seemed to work pretty good I had them right at the rear axle. Only white knuckle spot was on our unplowed gravel road nice drift from the wind at teh top of a long hill. The stock Firestone Destination LE tires did a pretty good job.

In our list of tips we forgot a very good one keep the tank full more weight in the rear.

Did get to see a proverbial short filling. A moron in a RAM 4x4; I am not sure of any other areas but they seem to be kindred spirits, when you see a RAM usually a moron is driving it around here. Anyway he barreled past everone else who was going 30 mph, at about 50 came up on a stopped car hit his brakes spun and ended up sideways on top of a median facing the wrong way. Proof once again 4x4s get better traction but stopping is still the issue.

(note to any Ram drivers here since you are on a Tacoma site I am assuming you are not a moron because you own, or are interested in owning at least one great truck.)

Last leg of my drive home is a twisty hilly 2 lane to get home, a regular deer alley. Sure enough I come out of a blind curve and here is Bambi's mom licking snow off of the road. I hit the brakes and horn she starts to run slips and falls on the snow slides into the other lane and so I can slide past her. I am thinking, come on, my poor truck still has less than 350 miles on her.

Good for you, I am glad you are pleased with your purchase and adapting to the condition nature throws at you. I am lucky in the fact that the weather has petered out and is goind to be clear for the next few days. Bambi has run for the hills since we are in the middle of hunting season.

 

Bambi is out on the roads because it is shotgun season and they are being spooked out of the woods. Saw tracks across the drive way when I got home tonight. Weather holds out this weekend I will be chasing Bambi, prefer to do it with my Remington than my Toyota.

you guys are using boomsticks? now i may sell them, but only to those too weak to hunt with rope and a knife like i do. i also wear a loin cloth

 

I hope the loin cloth is blaze orange I would hate to see you get ticketed for that....

 

Right now we are in shotgun season. However the DNR also allows muzzle loaders and handguns during shotgun season. Tomorrow early I am going to check out my timber (about 10 acres worth) to see if any are hanging around. Probably take the 12 ga and my .357. A close shot, under 50 yards, I would trust my ability with the revolver.

Iowa allows rifles over .24 caliber, the last season of the year in the bottom 3 tiers of counties. I only live one tier from that but don't own any rifles above .223 right now. If I go out with rifle hunters I would take the muzzle loader. I had it out a month or so ago and I was hitting clay pigeons on a hill side at 100 yards at our local range.

 

N.Y only allows shot gun in the upper part of W.N.Y, lower tiers and the ADK are allowed riffle and hand gun.
