I tried premium for two tanks and got the exact same mileage as low grade. I didn't really seem to notice any power increase either.

Premium does give you better gas mileage - but is it worth the extra cost?

You guys should sit down and figure the *cost per mile* and compare to the cost per gallon for premium or low grade or even mid grade.

I tried premium for a month and got 1mpg better. I found that I could alter my driving style with regular and get over 1mpg better pretty easily and better than 1mpg most of the time. So I went back to regular and try to drive more conservatively. I did notice the engine ticking was signifigantly less with premium, but thats about the only advantage I found.

this would be my concern..does the small mpg increase constitute purchasing gas that is on average 20 cents a gallon more expensive?i guess it would have to be looked at over a longer period like say 6months to a year, but i really would like to know if it's a significant saving in the long run, or better to just run the 87

When I calced out the price vs. mpg., the higher octain was about $2.00 to $4.00 a fill up less, so its cost affective. :)

When gas went over $4.00 a gallon I went to 85 oct and have not switched back to 87. Do you think it will fuck up my tacoma if I stay with the 85?

I recently did a three month long experiment. Tracked each tankful over that time - half on regular, half on premium. A whole mix of different gas station brands.

I found no difference whatsoever. In fact, my best tankful was regular! It was a highway stint and I suspect I had a tailwind....

    I'm sticking with regular.

Ive noticed that I get better MPG with Premium. Also like someone said earlier about the ticking not as bad. To me I like the comfort feeling that I'm helping out my motor with 91 octane..

Error Repair, I too live in Barrie.

I check my fuel consumption (L/100km) everytime I fill up, which is usually at the 1/4 tank left mark.

Two fill-ups ago I filled up with Shell 87 (reg). Driving 120km/h on the 400 three days in a row got me 11.9L/100km. ( Barrie to Brampton )

I then filled up with Premium at Costco. I will fill back-up today and post my mileage later this weekend.

I'm trying to figure out if COSTCO uses ethanol to make there fuel cheaper. It is not labelled on any of the pumps that I've seen. ??? If not then I would suggest buying REG and Premium there!
There REG gas is at least 4cents/L cheaper then the others. There Premium is about .5cents more then REG elsewhere.

Personally, I like figuring it out as a *cost per mile* for each.
    Say for instance (example):
    Premium $2.00 gallon @ 20 gallon tank = $40 to fill w/ Premium
    Regular $1.80 gallon @ 20 gallon tank = $36 to fill w/ Regular

    You're getting 20mpg w/ Premium & 18mpg w/ Regular

After figuring all that out - they're both the same cost per mile (10 cents per mile).

I remember doing a similar figure a few months back when the gas prices were $4+ and the premium wasn't all that cost effective (especially at those prices). It depends on each situation and what the benefits (other than cost) you're willing to accept (or not).

Out here, the cost of primium is always $0.20 higher than regular. Even if the gas is $4.00 a gallon, 91 is still only .20 more, so I have always noticed a saveings. It may in different areas, though, due to atmospheric conditions, and such................

After about 3 months of unofficial testing I get about 18.5 mpg on 89 octane and 20.5 on 91 octane. I'm not sure about the ethanol content of the gas but I try to get Shell gas

With a 10% blend of E-10, there is on average 2%-3% less overall energy content than straight gasoline. I doubt very much that this actually translates into the 15%-30% drop in mileage that many attribute to ethanol.

it depends on the states too. some areas use more ethanol and some use it in all grades vs just the cheaper ones.

Same here. It makes no difference if gas is $.50/gal or $5.00/gal, it's still a $.20 difference.
